I love teaching. Teaching for me is a creative experience that enables me to facilitate the learning process. I love to see the transformation of a beginner from barely being able to introduce themselves in the target language to being able to engage in a conversational exchange such as a contextualised role-play. Learning a language is the result of a collaboration between teacher and learner and I definitely like to be part of it. Moreover, being a language learner myself, I never forget the challenges that a student may be confronted with, which I like to believe enables me to help my students. I try to respond to the learner’s feedback and act upon it. In a nutshell, if a student is struggling with any given new language items, I will always try to find another way to help them understand. I follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the principles of the communicative approach, where the learner is constantly encouraged to take an active role and emphasis is on developing communicative skills and not memorising words, sentences and grammatical rules per se. I present the new language in a real life-like context, whether it be a written or spoken text, and then move to the observation and analysis phase, all of this followed by guided written as well as speaking practice, depending on the level of the learner. I try to avoid long complicated grammatical definitions – they belong to academic texts of descriptive linguistics. I prefer to resort to the inductive method as regards the teaching of grammatical rules, guiding and encouraging the learner to identify any potential rules. This method is very effective as it keeps the students actively engaged in the learning process. I try to incorporate all four basic skills during one session. I regard the use of audio tracks as well as audio-visual materials as essential in order to enable the learner to develop listening comprehension skills. Besides that, videos particularly can make a language class more interesting and fun, too, depending on the subject matter, of course. This leads me to talk about how important it is to make learning fun. While amusement and interest do not have a cause-effect relationship with learning, they definitely play an important role in keeping motivation levels high. That is why I use games activities whenever possible.
