About Dan
I'm a musician at heart and by trade, as well as a sound engineer, and a lover of diy electronic instruments and noisemakers. Most of my time is spent either practicing and playing guitar and bass, recording music, or constructing little music makers, drum machines, synthesizers, etc.
I've been playing guitar since the age of 6, it's my primary instrument and the instrument I'm most connected to, so I get a lot of joy out of teaching it to others. I also specialise in teaching bass to guitar players, since it's such a common and surprisingly difficult switch to make.
Outside of the world of instruments, I have a deep interest in music theory - how it came about, how it works, how to conceptualise it in the modern world, when to use it and when to forget about it. I encourage all my students to continue their music theory studies (or to start learning) alongside their playing, but if theory's *really* not your thing then let's forget it and just get into the technicalities of playing.
My other obsession is in designing and constructing electronic instruments and musical devices. If that's your thing, or you're at all interested, then I promise you I am just as excited about anything you want to make as you are, and we wont stop til it's done. Right now I'm building my own midi keyboard completely from scratch, but previously I've made drum machines out of rocks, I've made synthesizers out of rubbish, and I've made entirely new instruments out of ultrasonic sensors and aluminium plates. If your project is out of my scope of ability then I'll just point you in the right direction - it would have to be a pretty big scope to get there though!
As far as my education goes, I've been taking private guitar lessons since I was a child, went to a specialist music highschool, and then studied at the Elder Conservatory in Adelaide. I've been teaching private students for almost 10 years now, and I still love it. Music is my passion and takes up a mildly concerning amount of my life, and I genuinely love teaching it - so I'm excited to get into it with you!

When I teach people music, whether that's theory, practical electronics, or guitar, I'm always aiming to provide a deeply thorough understanding. That means me making sure you have a really solid grasp of whats going on before we move to the next topic or practice regimen.
In general, my teaching structure starts with looking at what your individual learning or project goals are, and then figuring out together what the best way to go about that is - always taking into account roughly how many lessons you're thinking of taking, and how much time, money and energy you want to spend on it.
I'm ideally looking for students who already know they love music, and who are excited to dive into it, rather than people who might just want to step a toe in first. That's only because I tend to get quite invested in the progress of my students, and love it when we can bounce off each other's passion.
I'm flexible though, and I'm here for whatever you're keen on, no big commitment necessary. I'm also a big believer in students feeling comfortable and free to swap teachers as they please, and I like to make sure anyone who comes my way knows they can switch to someone else without any judgement! If I'm not right for you, tell me what you're feeling and I probably know someone better suited!
