About Marissa
I have attained a solid grounding in the subjects I teach through the fields in which I have had academic and professional experience. Therefore I am well-versed in the content of the subjects I offer tutoring for.
In addition to my academic and professional qualifications, I have had the unique circumstance of experiencing multiple faces of the teaching and learning process.
- I was homeschooled on an atypical accelerated pathway designed in my home specifically for me, which allowed me to complete high school four years ahead of my peers and apply for my first degree at 14.
- I occasionally attended and participated in mainstream classes with peers my age prior to my completion of high school, and thus encountered the typical teaching and learning setting.
- I have had the experience of teaching a diverse selection of students, specifically including remedial classes, and I found effective approaches to ensuring that each member of a class met their learning goals and that no student fell through the cracks.
This has allowed me to grasp, through both first- and second-hand experience, the importance and value of providing individualized learning experiences and pacing for students. I have personally witnessed how "one size fits all" approaches are often not adequate for students who wish to move at different paces or in different directions from the standard curriculum, and these approaches do not always offer room for students to catch up and keep up.
As such, based on vast experience and on what I have seen work successfully, my teaching approach prioritizes the students as the key factor in my teaching process as well as in their learning process. This includes combining the student goals with their strengths, capabilities, challenges, and collaboratively developing a lesson plan for the students with the students' involvement that takes into account where the student currently is. I also have a thorough understanding of the need to, and process of, revising a learning path to meet new needs, challenges and skills.

I provide online tutoring and assistance with homework in mathematics, English language and computer science, up to high school level.
I am a data science professional. I hold a bachelor's degree in Computing and Information Systems, and a master's degree in Financial Engineering. I speak English as a first language.
I have experience teaching in-person and online classes at secondary school and high school levels. I also have niche experience in teaching remedial classes, and so can assist students who have fallen behind in their curriculum due to the pandemic or other challenges.
I tailor lessons to suit each student's needs individually, and I match the pace at which the student is comfortable learning and progressing. Student input is welcomed and encouraged and is incorporated into tailoring their sessions.
Tutoring focuses on the subject matter and content of the subject being taught, and includes teaching useful learning tools and techniques. Assistance with homework will include tools and techniques for tackling questions and assignments. Most students will end up with a tailored set of sessions that involve a combination of the two approaches.
I offer online tutoring in all areas of mathematics including algebra, arithmetic, pre-calculus, calculus, geometry, statistics and more.
I also offer tutoring for the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing comprehension and more.
Tutoring in computing and computer science covers content on a case by case basis to suit each student, and can cater for everything from basic computer literacy, to computer science fundamentals, to advanced computer science concepts, to programming.
