About Sage

I have been giving formal tutoring at Intellichoice tutoring since October of 2016. This is a service aiming to help low income students in at-risk areas of the Dallas metroplex catch up with well-off students in achievements in math.

While serving as a tutor, I have helped a total of about 20 students with math ranging from basic arithmetic to algebra, but I have been a tutor to peers in various subjects ranging from statistics to chemistry at the college level.

Since I primarily work with at-risk students, the results achieved have been a dramatic ability to demonstrate competence in areas of arithmetic and algebra, since the children I tutor are quite young in age. As for my peers, I have been able to get peers achieving A's in exams without much need for additional studying for lessons missed in class. This involves explaining the steps in solving problems in the sciences, and the rationale for the way things work the way they do in math and computer science. Typically this is something glossed over by teachers in school, but what I and my peers find to be most effective in solidifying connections between instruction and ability to answer questions.

About the lesson

I am a sophomore at Swarthmore College with a love for mathematical reasoning and philosophical inquiry - with a knack for all things abstract and arcane. Coming from an educational background in which I heavily relied on self study, I have ample familiarity with the reasoning a mind of a gifted student might have.

I mold my instruction to the achievements of the students I'm tutoring. For example, when tutoring an elementary aged student struggling with counting, I was able to devise a way to improve his counting by tapping into his ability and liking of mental multiplication.

In this sense, I do not force the rigidity of failed classroom instruction onto the student, and let the student explain without fear when he or she does not comprehend a lesson. I recognize that the success of the student is dependent on the instruction received, and thus I am claiming the responsibility of the failures and successes of any work I do with the students.
