About Jessica

I am a student at SNHU going for my degree in early childhood education. I currently work at a charter school as a teachers assistant. I have a history as a paraprofessional up to 6th grade. I have parent trainings in speech pathology and occupational therapy as well as ABA therapy.

About the lesson

Here is a short lesson plan for tutoring reading in the early childhood years.

Subject: Letter Recognition and Phonics

Objective: By the end of the lesson, the child will be able to recognize and associate the letter "A" with its corresponding sound.

Materials Needed:

Large flashcard or picture of the letter "A"
Small objects or pictures that start with the "A" sound (e.g., apple, ant, airplane)
Whiteboard or chart paper
Markers or crayons
Reading book with simple sentences or short paragraphs

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (5 minutes)
Greet the child and engage in a brief conversation to establish rapport.
Explain that today's lesson will be focused on the letter "A" and its sound.
Ask the child if they know any words that start with the "A" sound and encourage them to share their knowledge.
Letter Recognition (10 minutes)
Show the child a large flashcard or picture of the letter "A."
Ask the child to repeat the letter's name and make its sound ("A" as in "apple").
Practice tracing the letter "A" on a whiteboard or chart paper, using markers or crayons.
Encourage the child to trace the letter along with you and provide positive reinforcement.

Associating "A" with Objects (10 minutes)
Introduce a few small objects or pictures that start with the "A" sound (e.g., apple, ant, airplane).
Show each object or picture to the child and say its name, emphasizing the beginning sound.
Ask the child to repeat the word and identify the starting sound of each object.

Reading Activity (15 minutes)
Select a reading book with simple sentences or short paragraphs.
Choose a page or section that includes words starting with the letter "A."
Read the text aloud to the child, pointing out and emphasizing the "A" sound in the words.
Invite the child to repeat the words or sounds with you.

Recap and Closure (5 minutes)

Congratulate the child on their progress and effort.
