About Karven

I graduated from the Overseas School of Colombo with distinction in 2021 while also receiving my IB Diploma. Throughout the MYP and DP programs, I consistently remained on the Honor Roll while eventually graduating with the subject prize for IB HL History, and scoring perfectly in HL language and literature. I then went on to pursue my undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne, a major in History and a minor in Media Communications. Completed in 2025, I also received the Ormond Scholar award for outstanding academic achievement during my degree. Currently, I am pursuing my Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne Law School and tutor in order to stay engaged in language and literature and pass on my love of the field to the next generation of academics. I ensure students will feel comfortable and enjoy my tutoring sessions, with one-on-one classes to ensure specific attention to each student's learning styles and temperament, in order to help them achieve and hopefully surpass their academic goals.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that every student can become a confident, capable, and independent thinker when given the right tools and guidance. In English, this means helping students not only understand texts, but also develop their own voice and analytical perspective. I aim to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore ideas, ask questions, and take ownership of their learning.

I use a student-centred and skills-based approach, tailoring each lesson to the student’s current level, curriculum requirements, and learning style. For younger students (Grades 6–9), I focus on building strong foundations in reading comprehension, essay writing, and textual analysis through interactive discussions and model examples.
For senior students (VCE and IB), my lessons are structured around exam-style analysis, essay planning, and advanced argument development. I teach students how to interpret prompts, construct persuasive and coherent essays, and engage critically with literary techniques, themes, and contexts. Regular feedback and reflection are central to my approach, helping students refine both their writing and critical thinking skills over time.
