About Tristan

I'm a CTO of a company which is inventing a robotic arm to automate tasks in hospitals that no one wants to do. In that role, I have to teach my contractors/interns/employers on how to program at the optimal level, so that everyone in our team succeeds. Along with that, I have also tutored professionally since august 2016, with students that were in year 1 through to year 5, clients that had ADHD, and on the other end of the spectrum, I've had students in high school from year 8 to year 11. Most of these students were taught mathematics, but I occasionally had to teach English to them too.

About the lesson

Flexibility is the key methodology to teaching students. The greatest issue the educational system has with teaching, is that it assumes that every student's learning style is the same, and so they teach every student only 1 particular way. Einstein further illustrates my point with an analogy "Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid".

I adapt my learning style based on what the student needs. If the student is unmotivated, I will incorporate psychological techniques to the student's lessons, techniques I have learned which got me through being a CTO at my company. If the student is struggling with a concept written in a semantic way, I will make diagrams and visualizations. If the student is shy in class, we will focus more on easy questions, but getting them right, so that she/he becomes more comfortable.

The only thing we need to make a student's grades improve, is the full cooperation from the parent to join in with the tutoring experience. As a tutor, I cannot punish a student for bad behavior, I can not spend the whole lesson nagging her to do homework that I may have set her, I can not force her to speak to teachers about important topics. For these things to happen, unfortunately the parents have to step in and work with the tutor. If this cooperation is fully met, then the methodology that I will incorporate will flourish.
