About Violet

I’m Violet, a credentialed California elementary teacher with 15 years of classroom experience. I have taught preschool, TK, kindergarten, 4th grade, and 5th grade, so I understand how reading skills develop from the very first letter sounds to reading chapter books with understanding.

Much of my career has been in Title I schools, where I have worked with students from diverse backgrounds, including many English learners. I have helped many students who started the year behind in reading make steady, measurable progress.

Reading intervention is my focus. In the classroom, I have seen how quickly struggling readers improve when they get the right instruction and consistent one-on-one support. I started tutoring to give families that support outside the school day.

About the lesson

My teaching method:

I use structured, explicit, research-based reading instruction. I teach reading skills step by step in a clear order and make sure each skill is solid before moving on. Lessons are hands-on, using letter tiles, sound games, and decodable books so students practice new skills right away.

Every student starts with a reading skills screening. I check phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension. You then receive a written Learning Profile that shows your child’s strengths, the skills to work on, and my lesson plan.

A typical lesson:

1. Warm-up review of sounds and skills from the last lesson
2. Phonemic awareness practice (hearing and working with sounds in words)
3. A new phonics skill taught directly, then practiced through word building and reading
4. Reading a book at the right level to build fluency
5. Vocabulary and comprehension questions about the text
6. A quick check of the day’s skill and a short home practice activity
