About Joanne

I'm a novelist, a poet and a teacher. I've been teaching literature and creative writing to young people for over 15 years - in schools, universities and private homes. What I love most is discovering and encouraging new voices.

I hold a Phd in Literature from Cambridge University (2010), and another in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University (2025). Dancing on Knives, my debut novel, was nominated for the 2025 Booker Prize. More important than my qualifications, though, is my commitment to creating a warm, inspiring environment for emerging writers.

About the lesson

I offer flexible creative writing tuition for young people – either 1:1 or in small, supportive groups.

Some students want inspiration and a regular writing habit. For them, I run themed sessions, using carefully chosen prompts from art, nature and literature. These sessions create a focused, encouraging space to write, reflect and share.

Others want to learn craft and techniques more deeply. I offer 6-week courses on both poetry and fiction:

My poetry classes are a chance to explore the art of poetry in a welcoming and gentle way. Each week, we’ll read poems from around the world that explore a shared human experience, and we’ll use them as a catalyst to start new poems of our own.

My fiction classes introduce the key elements of successful story-telling. You’ll learn about traditional rules (and when to break them), find out how celebrated writers achieve their effects, and try out exercises designed to hone your attention and develop your voice.

I can also support:
• GCSE or A Level creative writing
• Building a portfolio
• Developing confidence and finding your voice
• Shaping a longer-term writing project
