About Simon
Over the last 8 years, I’ve taught piano to more than 150 students, focusing on personalized instruction that balances technical skill with creative expression. I emphasize foundational skills such as finger independence, rhythm, and sight-reading, while nurturing expressive qualities like phrasing, dynamics, and tonal variety. I incorporate theory and improvisation to enrich lessons and encourage creativity. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s musical interests and learning style, whether classical, jazz, or contemporary. A particularly rewarding experience was helping a student overcome stage fright and perform confidently in their first recital, which was a breakthrough in their musical journey. I encourage students to set realistic goals and establish consistent practice routines, promoting steady progress and motivation. Ultimately, I aim to foster confident, expressive musicians who find joy in their piano studies.

I see piano lessons as a partnership between teacher and student, and my role is to support, inspire, and adapt as we grow together. Every student learns differently, and I thrive on creating a custom approach for each one. My method starts with strong technique—correct hand position, fluid finger movements, rhythm training, and note reading—but also emphasizes emotional engagement and musical storytelling.
I often use visuals, analogies, and real-world musical examples to make abstract concepts more relatable. We’ll talk about what a piece is trying to say, and how to communicate that message through phrasing, tempo, and dynamics. I also incorporate listening exercises, history tidbits, and even guided improvisation to deepen students’ understanding and enjoyment. A particularly memorable student of mine struggled with perfectionism and often froze when making small mistakes.
Over time, we built a lesson routine that emphasized exploration, creativity, and imperfection as part of learning. Today, they’re more relaxed, expressive, and even compose their own short pieces for fun. That kind of growth—musical and personal—is the true reward of teaching for me.
