I like to communicate with the student's actual teachers and see their lesson plans and previous tests to get a feel for what they should be prepping for. I typically do homework with my students, but if they have none or we finish early, we may review previous tests/quizzes, use study material their teacher gave them, or use study material I have for them. I understand different students require different teaching methods and will act accordingly.
