About Eliza

I’m a Classical Flautist and teacher based in London currently studying for my Masters Degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a first class undergraduate degree where I was under the tutelage of Helen Brew, Co-Principal of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and studied Piccolo with Janet Richardson, Principal Piccolo of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Luke Russell, Principal Piccolo of the BBC Scottish Orchestra. During my time there I played with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as well as the Scottish Opera. I now study with renowned composer and flautist Ian Clarke, former flautist with the London Philharmonic and Welsh National Opera Sarah Newbold and Principal Piccolo of the Royal Opera House, Christopher Green.

I was educated at Wells Cathedral School as part of their specialist music programme where I first discovered my love of teaching young children through the school’s outreach programme for primary schools. I also have close ties with the organisation Flutewise where I volunteer as pastoral staff and teach during their residential courses which are aimed at young flute players ages 7-13.

As a teenager, I took part in various national ensembles across the country such as:

National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain (co-principal flute)
National Children’s Wind Orchestra of Great Britain (orchestra leader)
National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain (principal flute)
National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain
National Youth Orchestra of Scotland
The Orchestra of Opera North Youth Academy (principal flute)

I also had the pleasure of working with the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain; playing in the pit for an updated revamp of ‘The Beautiful Game’ commissioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his 70th birthday that did a week-long run in the West End. I returned to the company in the summer of 2020 to play flute and piccolo in the remote production of ‘Ragtime’ during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

I am committed to encouraging my students to engage in the audition/exam process and participate in wonderful orchestral opportunities that are available to children and young adults in particular at local as well as national levels. Personally I benefited enormously from these organisations and I am very keen to pass on my enthusiasm for social engagement through playing an instrument.

I have attended masterclasses across the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and Italy with celebrated professors such as Gitte Marcusson, Robert Winn, Kate Hill, Phillipa Davies, Michael Cox, Denis Bouriakov, Lorna McGhee and Wissam Boustany.

I have also been recognised in prestigious award ceremonies including 3rd place in the British Flute Society’s Young Performer Competition and 3rd place in the International Young Soloist Competition. I have also been led by distinguished conductors such as Daniel Harding and Howard Williams in prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Bridgewater Hall.

I have participated in many groups and classes as well as reigniting my love of chamber music; starting the Kelvingrove Arts Trio that has played in public concerts and weddings around Glasgow, London and beyond. I am passionate about mentoring flute players no matter the age or standard and have substantial teaching experience particularly with children and young people. In my spare time, I love to bake and visit art galleries.

I have varied teaching experience ranging from ages 7-60 and beginners to advanced. My lessons are personally tailored to the desires of the student whether it’s to pick up a new skill or to just relax! I also offer ABRSM exam training if the student wishes to embark through these and gain some qualifications along the way! I love meeting new people and listening to their backstories as I find personal experiences to be essential in the tailoring of lessons and the result of self expression that learning an instrument offers!

In my lessons I cover all essentials starting right at the beginning from putting the flute together, all the way to more advanced ideas such as exploring sound, technique and tone colours. I will work with the student at their own pace directly to their needs so they are getting the most out of their lessons yet are enjoying themselves and are able to play freely. I am also trained in mindfulness techniques which I think especially when working towards a goal such as ABRSM exams, helps keep the student relaxed and calm so the experience is always enjoyable and comfortable.
