About Matteo

I have been living in London since 2010 where I achieved a Post-Grad diploma in HR at Westminster University in 2016. I have been teaching Italian language since 2018. During the pandemic I decided to turn my passion about teaching into a full time job. In 2022 I attended a CLTA certified course at International House on teaching Italian as a second language to adults. I am qualified and experienced in preparing students for GCSE and CILS certificates. I work on a freelance basis for two language schools in London and I devote the rest of my working schedule to private students. I also do small groups. I am happy to tailor the classes to your likes but my main interests are: Current Affairs The jungle of Italian politics Sports Italian cuisine Folklore and traditions Italian history Contemporary literature Italian music Vacation in Italy.

I am a native Italian who turned his passion for Italian language and culture into his profession. I am a friendly person, always looking to create a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere during the classes. I am available for online group classes or 121. Lessons will be tailored on the student's needs and interests. During the first lesson I will assess your level just with a very informal chat and we'll set up together a functioning plan. During my classes I make use of various resources and I design my own material which I send to the student to revise. I also provide homework on a regular basis.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am an Italian native speaker as I was born and lived in Italy until I was 25. I then lived in the UK for 14 years, studying and working in English achieving a proficient level
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Italy is full of defining characters that contributed to shaping our culture. I would pick Dante Alighieri for his contribution in defining modern Italian language.

I cannot do without mentioning Roberto Benigni as well, for his ability to face the toughest topics with a smile on his face - as the most typical Italian ;)
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

There are many Italian words internationally recognised that we can be "proud" of, from ciao to food-related words.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Learning a language is part of approaching a culture. I am always amazed by how many students approach Italian language because they love my country
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Learning a language is always a long process, and I believe the main related skill is consistency. You have to be motivated to keep going in the long term. Italian specifically might present some challenging grammar structures, but it is the tutor's job to accompany the student during his journey making the learning process as communicative and smooth as possible. I aim at doing so mainly by having a clear development plan in mind, structured lessons and, most importantly, by listening to any students' needs and adapting my teaching method to their requests
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember when I went abroad with the Erasmus project during my years of uni. It was really challenging to realise that after studying English for many years, real-life conversations were a different thing, and I still struggled to speak as well as I wanted. But I also remembered my satisfaction when I could put into practice my learning and start communicating with people from all over Europe - it just changed my life!!!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

As mentioned above, the Erasmus project and the 9 months I spent in Prague studying in English opened my mind and convinced me I wanted to travel and discover the world around me - it does not matter how lovely it feels to be back home after travelling!!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

The love I feel for my job. The connection I try to create with every single student. The personal satisfaction I have for a student learning something new
