About Sven
Hi, I'm Sven, a dedicated chess coach and player based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I've been actively coaching with C&O Chess since Fall 2025, working with students of all ages through their programs, and I now offer private lessons both in-person at my home in Gaithersburg and online via Zoom.
Fell in love with chess in 2016-2017 and began playing in tournaments, studying chess and playing with friends. In college, I studied Economics and received a Master's in Economics in 2022 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I have always enjoyed analysis, whether it be financial analysis, film analysis or analyzing chess. I believe this is one of the reasons why I excel at chess and enjoy helping kids and beginners learn the game in the unique way I personally learned it.
I also stream chess content and stay deeply involved in the local chess community (including the Rockville Chess Club), which keeps my teaching current and engaging.

My teaching philosophy centers on making chess accessible, enjoyable and deeply practical. I believe chess is not just about memorizing moves but about developing creative thinking and pattern recognition. I share knowledge through interactive, student-centered sessions that blend explanation, guided practice and real-game application, always adapting to each learner's pace and goals.
I use a mix of interactive and structured techniques tailored to the student's needs -
Socratic questioning: I ask guiding questions to help students discover ideas themselves rather than just lecturing, building deeper understanding and confidence.
Practical examples and analysis: We review real games (student's own or classic master games) to identify patterns in tactics, strategy, and endgames.
Hands-on practice: Frequent puzzles, position exercises, and "what if" scenarios during lessons, plus homework like game analysis or targeted drills.
Progressive building: Start with fundamentals and layer on complexity (e.g., simple endgames before full middlegame plans).
Software: I use Chess.com for interactive demos and analyzing games.
Lesson Plan -
A standard 60-minute lesson is customized but generally follows this flow:
Warm-up (5-10 min): Quick review of previous homework or a fun puzzle/tactic to get the mind engaged.
Core teaching (20-30 min): Focused instruction on a specific topic (e.g., opening principles, tactical motifs, or endgame technique), explained with examples and interactive questions.
Application & practice (15-20 min): Student solves problems or plays a short game/position against me, with real-time feedback.
Review & assignment (5-10 min): Summarize key takeaways, discuss improvements, and assign targeted practice (e.g., analyze one of your recent games or solve 10 puzzles on a theme).
My lessons are ideal for -
Beginners and kids: Building solid foundations in a fun way (ages 6+).
Intermediate players (1200-1400 Elo): Improving tactics, strategy, openings, and middlegame planning.
