About Zina
My name is Zina, and I am a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering at Rice University. I earned my B.S. in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Environmental Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Throughout my academic journey, I have developed not only a strong foundation in math, science, and engineering, but also a real passion for helping others learn and grow with confidence.
Teaching and mentorship have always been important to me. During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a calculus and chemistry tutor, where I learned how to explain difficult concepts in a clear, patient, and encouraging way. I understand that every student learns differently, and I take pride in creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and improving step by step.
Outside of formal tutoring, I have also played a major mentoring role in my own family. As the oldest of four siblings, I have always helped guide my younger siblings academically and personally. I am especially proud that both of my younger sisters are currently at Stanford, and I am now helping guide my younger brother, who is in high school, as he works toward reaching his dream school. That experience has strengthened my ability to motivate students, set high standards, and help them stay focused on their long-term goals.
What students can expect from me is professionalism, patience, preparation, and genuine care. I do not just want students to get the right answer, I want them to truly understand the material and believe in their ability to succeed. Whether a student needs help building foundational skills, preparing for exams, or gaining confidence in a difficult subject, I am committed to helping them reach their goals.

My approach as a tutor is centered on patience, clarity, and building confidence. I know that students learn in different ways, so I try to adjust my teaching style based on the student’s needs and current level of understanding. I like to start by finding out what the student already knows, where they feel stuck, and how they prefer to learn. From there, I break difficult ideas into smaller, easier steps and explain not only how to solve a problem, but why the method works. I believe this helps students become more independent and confident over time.
My teaching method focuses on active learning. Instead of only showing solutions, I guide students through the thought process, ask questions along the way, and encourage them to explain concepts back to me in their own words. I also use practice problems, real examples, and repetition when needed so students can build a strong foundation. In subjects like math and science, I place a lot of importance on understanding core concepts first, because that makes harder problems much easier to approach.
A typical lesson usually begins with a quick review of previous material and any questions the student has. Then I introduce the main topic for the session, work through examples step by step, and give the student a chance to solve similar problems with my support. At the end of the lesson, I summarize the key ideas, point out common mistakes to avoid, and suggest what the student should practice next.
