About Jessie

I was born in Datong, in northern China, and earned my bachelor's degree at Beijing Language and Culture University. There, I had the opportunity to meet students from all over the world who shared the same passion for learning Chinese and exploring Chinese culture.

During my undergraduate years, I taught students preparing for the HSK test, helping them improve their speaking and writing skills. Many of them became not just students but great friends. After that, I moved to the UK and gained my master's degree (Distinction) from the University of Southampton and began teaching Chinese professionally.

With over 800 hours of teaching experience, I have worked with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and proficiency levels, ranging in age from 14 to 65. To enhance my teaching skills, I obtained the Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (CTSOL) last year, becoming a certified Chinese teacher.

As a language learner myself, I understand the challenges students face. That’s why I design customized lessons based on your goals and needs, ensuring a safe and supportive space for you to practice and build confidence. Let’s move beyond boring lessons and textbooks—learn real, practical Chinese that you can use in everyday life!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native Chinese speaker and I was born in mainland China
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I think the poet Li Bai is an iconic symbol of Chinese culture. He lived a colourful and adventurous life, travelling extensively throughout China and becoming friends with many other poets and artists of his time. Despite his popularity, Li Bai was also known for his rebellious streak and often spoke out against the ruling class in his poetry. He died in 762 AD, and his legacy continues to inspire poets and readers around the world.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

The phrase "三人行,必有我师 (sān rén xíng, bì yǒu wǒ shī)" - "In a group of three people, there must be one who can be my teacher." It reminds us that there is always something to learn from others. No matter how knowledgeable or experienced we may be, there will always be someone who knows more or has a different perspective. This phrase encourages humility and open-mindedness, as we should always be willing to listen and learn from those around us. It also emphasizes the importance of community and the value of diverse perspectives in our personal growth and development.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

As someone who grew up speaking Chinese, it holds a special place in my heart as it is not only my mother language, but it's also my cultural and ancestral identity. It is a part of who I am, and I take pride in being able to speak, read, and write in Chinese.

I believe that language is not just a tool for communication but also a gateway to understanding and appreciating different cultures. By sharing my language with others, I am not only promoting cultural diversity but also bridging gaps between people from different backgrounds.

I want to introduce Chinese to more people because I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the beauty and richness of the Chinese language and culture. Whether it's through teaching, translation, or cultural events, I am passionate about spreading the love and appreciation for the Chinese language and culture.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are two main difficulties I found in the learning process of my students:

The tones: Chinese has 4 tones and it might mean totally different thing if someone mispronounces the tones. This aspect of the Chinese language can be challenging for non-native speakers, as it requires them to not only remember the pronunciation of each word but also the tone in which it is spoken. For example, the word "ma" can mean "mother," "horse," "hemp," or "scold," depending on the tone used to pronounce it. This means that even a small mistake in tone can completely change the meaning of a sentence. To master the Chinese language, one must not only memorize the vocabulary but also practice the correct pronunciation of each word with the appropriate tone.
Characters: As each character has a unique meaning and sound. Unlike other languages, where words are made up of letters or syllables, each Chinese character is a distinct unit that represents a specific meaning or concept. In addition, the pronunciation of a character can vary depending on the context in which it is used. To memorize characters, Chinese language learners need to invest significant time and effort into studying and practising them. It requires practice to distinguish between characters that look similar but have different meanings and to learn to write each character accurately. One way to overcome this challenge is to use mnemonic techniques, such as creating stories or visual images to associate with each character to help in memorization. With practice and dedication, it is possible to become proficient in reading, writing, and understanding Chinese characters.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

    My anecdote :

I had a French Airbnb guest named Madame Dupont who offered me to taste her coffee brewed with the Moka pot. When she asked if I wanted some, I accidentally replied with "Si" instead of "Oui" because I got confused between French and Spanish. Madame Dupont laughed it off, and we both had a good chuckle about it during her stay.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I believe that travelling provides a unique opportunity to gain motivation and perspective when learning a new language. When you visit a new country and immerse yourself in the local culture, you can gain insights into the language, customs, and traditions of the people who live there. For me, there is nothing quite as rewarding as exploring a new country and learning about its culture, history, and people.

One of my most memorable experiences was when I travelled to Italy in 2018. Being able to communicate with locals in Italian was an incredibly rewarding experience. I remember having conversations with shopkeepers, waiters, and locals in cafes, and every interaction helped me to improve my language skills. I also learned a lot about Italian culture, art, and history by visiting museums, galleries, and historical sites.

Another great thing about travelling is that it allows you to make mistakes and learn from them. When you are in a new environment, you are bound to make mistakes, but that's how you learn. In fact, I found that the locals were often more than happy to help me when I made mistakes, and it was a great opportunity to practice and improve my language skills.

Overall, I think travelling is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to learn a new language. It not only provides motivation, but it also allows you to immerse yourself in the language and culture, and make mistakes without fear.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I think it's mainly my passion for teaching and getting to know more new people. I have students from all around the world : the UK, Belgium, Vietnam, Italy, and so on. Through the process of teaching, I also can see my language and culture from a totally different point of view and that makes me see the bigger picture and had the really valuable opportunity to compare my culture to different ones. I enjoyed the communication in my lessons a lot, especially when I can see the progress of my students.
