About Ugonma

I am an artist by profession. I studied Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and graduated in 2017 with second class upper honors. I specialize in painting. I'm a self-taught textile artist and brushing up my skills in computer-aided design (Photoshop, Illustrator and Corel Draw) after a graphic design internship. I'm equally a member of reputable art groups, including the Female Artists Association of Nigeria (FEAAN) South West zone. Its base is at Nike Art Gallery, in which some of my works have been collected by one of the owners. I've had exhibitions within Nigeria and been nominated in international art contests, as well as being part of art interviews. I've been a passive consultant to friends and colleagues who are art inclined and given useful advice and notified them of available opportunities based on their request. I'm a very passionate artist and love exploration and creativity in art. I equally want to channel that energy towards actively helping others excel in their art goals.

As an artist, I understand that people understand and assimilate at different levels. My goal at the beginning of each class is to understand the student or pupil, learn their interests and discover the best learning method for them. Above all, the goal is to unlock each person's creative potential which involves slow targeted measured approaches.
I teach in my studio, but if it's not convenient, I can take online classes. However, I believe studio experience is the best when possible.
I personally am very patient in teaching as my goal is always to find understanding in the person being taught. I am equally disciplined and despite my melancholic nature, I can be quite pragmatic.
I'm also intuitive as an artist which enables me to form a connection with people, understand their thought process and guide them out of frustrated situations because indeed I must admit, despite the fact that art helps in relaxation, it can be rather frustrating at times when you're trying to learn, but not quite getting it right.
Art is a beauty and I take it as my duty to show you it through your own lens.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started practicing art at a really young age. I was encouraged by my dad who encouraged my siblings and I to engage in creative activities during the holidays. This initial starting led to my interest in art. However, as I grew, I longed to find peace through art which led to my studying it in the university. I found the freedom I sought in art, self expression and a voice through painting.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I'm more attracted to works that are vibrant and works which are imbued with deep meaning. I, personally, I'm not biased with my judgement of art. I don't attach works to the artists but examine them independently. My perception of artworks is very dynamic however, I'm open to new ideas in art and art styles. My view of art is equally very subjective, different artworks affect me in different ways at different times. However, I'm usually sentimental towards conceptual art which are exhaustive in nature, emotionally engaging works and detailed works, mostly with pattern designs.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

I'd make it simple and precise.
There really is no straight cut to it. People approach art from various angles. However, the basics that one should know is that talent is not enough. Persistence and hard work pays. One has to continuously practice to make progress and evolve in art. Research, exploration and experimentation are key.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're right.
Believing in yourself is key. You never know until you try.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

It is boundless. I'm not sure words can really describe it, but art gives a me a sense of fulfilment. It's also a therapy for me especially when working on themes of interest and mandala art.
Certainly, there are also times it can be quite frustrating especially when the painting isn't coming out as I want. I've also abandoned some works. However, it's gladening when they do come out as I perceive them to be.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Every exhibition is a milestone for me and I feel delighted to showcase my works for people to engage with them. My desire is to create a lasting impression, something that lives forever.
A work I'm proud of is my canvas installation titled "Time Stands Time". The work was done in 2019 and I still get positive reviews on it. My motive was to capture and communicate the concept of time. Time stands still, it remains the same today, tomorrow and always. We are the ones who rush into and through time, or go back in time to recoil from the knowledge there.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

My students generally express the willingness to learn which gladdens me and encourages my efforts to guide them. Although, I'm yet to have a student who demonstrates unique ability and quick progression as regards going steps ahead.
    They are generally fast learners.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I believe it's important to be honest with my students, to teach what I know and be honest about how I can help. The aim of a tutor should be to guide aright. It's important to be honest with my teaching capabilities and experience.
In the words of Larry King "If you're honest with your audience, you can never go wrong".
