About Matt

Hi. I'm Matt. I am 45, and was born and raised in Liverpool.

I have an above-average Grade B in the Cambridge English Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) (QCF). In the 10 years that I have been teaching TEFL English, I have successfully delivered lessons to:

- several IELTS students, helping them to enter UK universities;
- 17 Arabic-speaking refugee adults working towards ESOL qualifications, refugees who arrived in Lancaster with their families as part of the UK Government’s Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme from Syria and the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region;
- several kindergarten classes in Berlin;
- groups of business English learners in Berlin;
- asylum seekers and refugees from around the world.

I also have a PhD in politics and conservation from Lancaster University (2024, a distinction in a Masters of academic research from the University of Bath (2017), and a Bachelors degree in Political Science and Communication from London Metropolitan University (2004).

Since I graduated from university in 2004 I have worked in various political and campaigning organisations, planning workshops and running training programmes, working with all ages, from secondary school upwards.

My profile in teaching:

- Can adapt coursebook lessons and materials;
- Comfortable and experienced teaching one-to-one or multi-lingual classes;
- Can teach grammar at all levels, from very beginners to near-native advanced (including pronunciation);
- Teach three different types of lesson: functional English, skills (reading, writing, speaking & listening), and grammar;
- Tailor lessons to suit a student’s interest;
- Deliver lessons that are varied, interesting, and, wherever possible, fun.

When I’m not teaching, my hobbies include all things music (listening to records on my beat-up 1960s record player, and playing my guitar to anyone who can’t run away fast enough), writing short stories, politics and activism, running and cycling, reading extensively, traveling, and meeting wonderful new people and exploring new cultures.

About the lesson

Whether you want to practice vocabulary, grammar, reading or writing, or if you want to practice your conversational skills with a native speaker, I’m here to help! I can work with lesson plans, text books or curricula, can help you progress through those tricky IELTS exams, or simply design lessons based on your individual interests for a casual course.

I am happy to tutor students of all levels, from beginners to advanced.

My English courses can be tailored to you and your level of English. Our classroom could be at your house or office/university, or in a quiet public place (if you are local). Or, our lessons can take place over Skype or Facetime, easily accessible from anywhere in the world, with flexible teaching hours and schedules. It’s your choice.
