About Sophie

Hello! I am a Cambridge University graduate with seven years of tutoring experience. During this time, I have taught English, French, and Spanish at all levels across all major exam boards, specialising in AQA. As such, I have the knowledge and resources necessary to help you, as well as the proof to back me - lots of happy students and all tutees reaching or exceeding their target grade(s). Although grades are key, I place significant importance on building confidence in ability and enjoyment of the subject. In my view, that’s half the battle! I am a native level French and Spanish speaker. I grew up in Spain and attended a French Lycée and British International School. I also completed a year abroad in Chile and at the Sorbonne, in Paris, studying full-time in French and Spanish. In my A-Levels, I scored full marks across all my French and Spanish exams, including the literature papers. This enabled me to view language through two lenses: firstly, as a native speaker, and secondly, as a language student. As a result, I understand grammar components, but more importantly, know how to explain them to students who have not previously been exposed to the language.

About the lesson

During our first session, we’ll make a list of targets and goals together. This is a good way of tracking progress throughout the sessions. This is how your average tutorial with me would run: 5-10min: review material from previous session to consolidate knowledge! 20-25min: full breakdown of a topic the student struggles with (e.g. for A level language students their chosen literature/cultural topic or grammar) 20-25min: full breakdown of a second topic of the student's choice (e.g. for A Level language students translation work or past paper questions) 5-10min: review material from the session, answer any questions & ensure the student fully understands all the material we have just covered together. The structure of these sessions is flexible and is only intended as a rough guide. I tailor my lessons to each student as to create an individual study plan. As such, I adapt to different lesson structures and teaching methods to make sure you get the most out of your session as possible! I use a mixture of theory, exercises, grammar and past paper questions to help you build a comprehensive understanding of the subject content, whilst simultaneously improving exam technique. I use a friendly and supportive approach to make sure the student feels comfortable, confident and open to learn in the lessons!
