About Jemma
I am an English PhD student at The University of Cambridge, researching a thesis on classical inheritance in the English Renaissance, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Prior to my PhD, I completed my BA in English at The University of Cambridge, and an MA at King’s College London in ‘Early Modern English Literature: Text and Transmission’ (for which I ranked first in my cohort).
I am an expert in early modern texts (William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, John Donne, John Webster, etc); and, I additionally have a comprehensive knowledge of canonical writers from all other periods of English literature.

My teaching method is dependent on the particular texts a student is studying, as well as their age. However, I like to explore a mixture of language, theme, context and genre in relation to their texts, often familiarising my older students with applicable literary criticism. I like to acquaint my students with a variety of poetry, prose and drama on top of their set texts, to make them feel comfortable linking to wider literary contexts and to accustom them to the different literary styles of various epochs.
For younger students, I focus on reading comprehension, creative writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. For those who are attempting to sit the 11+ exams, I also go through past papers and create tailored lesson plans based on their performance.
My work with GCSE or A-Level students will focus on their primary texts, exploring interpretative avenues that they will likely not have had introduced to them in the classroom.
For university (or American-college) applicants, I will spend time reading their applications and providing detailed feedback that includes tailored reading recommendations. Applicants will also have the opportunity to sit a practice interview with me, if desired.
Due to me working between Cambridge and London on varying days, I only provide tuition online via Microsoft Teams.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Jemma was trusted with the role of LGBT+ Officer of the Trinity Hall JCR. We, as her college peers entrusted her with confidential information in completing forms towards college funds, and personal stories when confiding in her. Jemma was an excellent college rep and made the college feel safe and welcoming.
Jemma is truly a wonderful and dependable person uniquely suited towards tutoring. Jemma has helped me several times with my own academic work, and it has proved invaluable. She has a great attention to detail, and really does love literature. Her passion shines through when she speaks about literature.
Having known Jemma for three years, working alongside her within our Cambridge college’s JCR for two of them, I can say without doubt that Jemma would make an excellent tutor. They are incredibly kind and friendly, with a huge amount of patience, while also incredibly driven and hardworking - the perfect qualities for a teacher.
Jemma is highly intelligent, knowing her subject in such great depth. Their passion for English Literature, and humanities more broadly, is infectious! Jemma can deliver detailed feedback in a constructive and helpful manner, always ensuring that you will reach your potential.
I cannot recommend Jemma enough.Jemma is a lovely and charming tutor who took my son Gavin for English 11+ classes over the Easter holidays. She really helped him to feel more confident in his English Literature skills, providing encouragement and support every step of the way while letting him try new exam techniques on his own. As a parent, the feedback given to me was more than sufficient, and I highly recommend Jemma to any other parent looking for an 11+ tutor.
I study English with Jemma, she is incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable, which makes her a very engaging and capable tutor. I highly recommend!
I study with Jemma at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, also reading English Literature. She has an incredibly broad knowledge of her subject, and often receives praise from supervisors for her perceptive and often boundary-pushing analysis. She has a particularly deep understanding for and appreciation of Sapphic literature, more recently focusing on the Renaissance. Jemma is always eloquent and engaging, often opening my eyes to new possibilities when discussing literature.
I studied with Jemma for two years and she was a great classmate of mine. First of all, she's very intelligent, doesn't miss any details whatsoever, and is always attentive and focused. Secondly, she is a great person: kind, considerate, patient and friendly - she would always help me with any topics I didn't understand in class, and thats very much a reflection of her character. Lastly, she is incredibly passionate about English literature, to the point where that passion becomes infectious. She has been studying literature for many years and therefore she would be the tutor I would go to without a doubt, and with all of these reasons combined, I recommend her to the highest degree.
Jemma, like any good tutor, is diligent and knowledgeable. Her academic record speaks for itself. What sets her apart is her ability to understand each student’s needs and cater her approach to these. She is reliable and engaging.
I attended classes on Shakespeare with Jemma during our first year at the University of Cambridge. She came up with innovate ideas, was willing to explore new concepts, and was always friendly and willing to assist others!
