About Dasha Gerz

I'm a 2nd year student at Jesus college, Cambridge, with experience tutoring English, Biology and Maths, helping my students prepare for 11+, GCSEs, A-levels and university applications.

Having applied to 12 schools at 11+, I have long-running expertise in entrance exams and appreciate what schools are looking for. Multiple of my students have secured competitive offers including City of London School and Tiffin School (girls).

I am passionate about English; I enjoy both reading a broad range of literature genres, exploring their writing devices and grammar to refine my writing in university essays. I also write short stories and poetry, with some of my poems featuring in the Clare pamphlet at Cambridge.

About the lesson

I believe in tailoring lessons to my student's needs, adapting to their goals, whether that is engagement with literature and development of writing skills or a quick ramp-up of 11+ grades. I adapt my lesson plans to the personality, study style, taste and attention span of every student.

For example to develop reading skills during KS3 and in preparation for the GCSE curriculum, I may start by reading a small extract of a book together, chosen according to the pupil's taste in hobbies, movies etc. Then we could discuss the key themes and ideas before answering a few written comprehension questions, analysing grammar and literary devices, before setting the rest of the chapter to read before the next lesson.

For 11+ preparation, we could instead start by looking at a few past paper questions, and learn to identify different types of questions and tactics for answering them under time pressure.
