About Dr Sean

I enjoy helping students understand Chemistry & Physics and turn that into exam results! I studied GCSEs and A-Levels in the UK, before my undergraduate in Physical Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at Cambridge (UK) and MIT (USA).

I studied GCSEs and A-Levels in the UK, before my degree in Physical Natural Sciences at Cambridge (UK) and MIT (USA). I started tutoring at university and have been tutoring for 20 years, through my PhD in 2008 my career as a research scientist and now again as a full time tutor.

Please note I only do in-person tutoring in the Wimbledon/Raynes Park area. I look forward to hearing from you - Sean

In our first lesson we will look at the your objectives and aspirations and develop a lesson structure to support this. I teach by finding new ways to explain topics, using a shared whiteboard and other visual methods.

I help students understand the importance of good exam technique to demonstrate what they have learnt. I am laser focused in helping dissect mock papers leaving no detail of the exam process unturned! Please note that after the first lesson, minimum lesson length is 60 minutes (virtual & in-person).

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in chemistry and private tutoring?

I first developed a passion for chemistry during my GCSEs and A-levels. I found it fascinating how chemistry explains everything around us, from the air we breathe to the medicines we take.

I discovered tutoring at university, helping classmates and younger students. I enjoyed making complex topics more understandable through visual explanations and real-world examples, and seeing students gain confidence in chemistry was incredibly rewarding.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor GCSE and A-level chemistry, focusing on concept clarity and exam technique.

I particularly enjoy teaching organic chemistry, as it explains how molecules interact to create everything from pharmaceuticals to plastics. I also love atomic structure and bonding, as these fundamental topics provide the basis for understanding the entire subject.

Many students struggle with chemistry calculations and exam technique, so I place a strong emphasis on step-by-step problem-solving and answer structuring for maximum marks.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes! My A-level chemistry teacher was fantastic at breaking down difficult topics into simple, structured explanations. His ability to make chemistry feel logical and engaging really influenced how I approach tutoring.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Clear explanations - Chemistry can feel overwhelming, so structured teaching is key.
Adaptability - Finding different ways to explain tricky topics.
Visual Teaching - Using diagrams, reaction mechanisms, and real-world applications.
Exam Strategy Focus - Helping students structure answers to maximise marks.
Encouragement & Patience - Building confidence in chemistry takes time!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my A-level students was struggling with NMR spectroscopy and structural determination. She found it overwhelming to interpret spectra and piece together molecular structures. Instead of just memorising patterns, we broke it down step by step:

First, we practised identifying key peaks and relating them to functional groups.
Then, we looked at splitting patterns and how they indicate neighbouring hydrogen environments.
Finally, we worked through real exam questions, starting with simpler molecules before building up to more complex structures.
By using colour-coded diagrams and a logical problem-solving approach, she started to see NMR as a puzzle rather than a mystery. By the time her exam came around, she was confidently analysing spectra and could determine molecular structures with ease. It was a great reminder that breaking things into smaller steps can turn even the most intimidating topics into something manageable!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

A common challenge in chemistry is exam technique-many students understand the content but don't know how to structure their answers for full marks. I focus on past-paper practice and mark scheme analysis to help students refine their approach.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion?

I'm passionate about making chemistry accessible and helping students unlock their full potential. I love teaching visually, whether it's through diagrams, interactive problem-solving, or real-world applications.

Beyond that, I enjoy exam coaching-helping students refine their exam technique and time management, so they feel fully prepared for their GCSEs and A-levels. Science is about understanding, but exams are about demonstrating that understanding under pressure.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

I teach chemistry visually, making abstract topics easier to understand.
I focus on exam preparation, helping students tackle past papers confidently.
I tailor lessons to the student, ensuring they feel supported and ready to succeed.
I don't just want my students to pass chemistry-I want them to understand and appreciate it.
