About Tom

Hi, I'm Tom! I'm a Cambridge educated economics tutor for A-level, IB and degree level students. I am a friendly and patient tutor, with a determination to help you raise your economics grades!

I spent four years studying Economics at Cambridge at undergraduate and Economic Research at Cambridge at Master's level, achieving a distinction in my Master's. I have also worked as an economist in London.

Since 2019, I have tutored economics professionally. As a result I have accumulated over 2000 hours of tutoring experience in economics.

I have experience tutoring A Level Economics students from different exam boards, including Edexcel and AQA. I also create Economics A Level resources, such as practice questions and model answers. I use these to help my tuition students get ahead in economics.

My degree level tutoring experience includes tutoring students from universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, UCL and Exeter.

I have experience tutoring core modules such as microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.

Also I have tutored students non-core modules. This includes development, trade, crime, urban economics, financial economics and industrial economics. My particular interests are also in labour economics and public economics.

I have also helped students as a dissertation advisor, though students should of course complete the assignment fully on their own.

In the past I have also helped advise students on university economics applications or getting a head start to undergraduate economics. Also if you have a unique request relating to economics, I'd be happy to consider your request.

A Level (AQA, Edexcel, other exam boards) and IB Economics

For A Level and IB Economics students, before the first session, I would request samples of written work. These can be tests and/or past schoolwork assignments. I can then offer detailed comments and start fixing any issues from the first session.

In the sessions, we typically cover course content and exam technique, tailored to the needs of the student. For instance, if the student is not comfortable with the course content, we can focus on going through the key course content from the beginning.

For other cases where the student is understanding the material relatively well, we can focus on the more difficult parts of the content. We can also focus more on on exam technique.

Exam technique, knowing how to answer each question, is becoming even more important for Economics A Level and IB students.

This includes how to structure essays. These structures are specific to each exam board. This includes AQA 25 markers as well as 9 and 15 mark questions, as well as Edexcel A 5, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 25 markers. I can share model answers with students, as well as critique students' answers, to help them improve.

In addition to this, I teach the four key exam skills for both these exam boards of knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. For example, what makes for effective evaluation or top level analysis?

I like to set and mark homework each week, which we review in our session. Here I can use my practice question resources, which are tailored to the student's exam board, to give the student more exam style practice and generate a greater degree of improvement.

For those I have tutored on a long-term, weekly basis in Economics A Level, the average grade improvement has been over two grades. I cannot guarantee a particular grade improvement for an individual student, as other factors matter, including but not limited to hard work. That said, I work hard to help all my students improve in economics.

While I often teach students on a weekly, long-term basis, I can also offer more or fewer sessions on a temporary or long-term basis.

Degree level economics

I can tutor students for degree level economics as a whole or focussing on a particular module.

As university modules vary significantly between universities, I begin by asking my students for any lectures and problem sets they have available for their particular course. This helps me teach the student to their particular exam.

I also ask for any particular issues they have with the course content, so I can tailor the sessions to the student's needs. For instance, this can be a case of focussing more on course content from scratch, learning just the hard parts of the course content or reviewing practice questions ahead of the exam.

For example we can cover the topics in your microeconomics module. This includes consumer and producer theory (including utility maximisation and cost minimisation), game theory in static and dynamic games, welfare economics, information failures including principal-agent problems and contract theory, education, health, labour, public economics and any other aspect of undergraduate microeconomics.

In macroeconomics, we can run through IS-LM / MP models, Solow economic growth theory and extensions, classical versus Keynesian models, international economics, intertemporal economics, business cycle theory and any other aspect of undergraduate macroeconomics according to your particular course.

For econometrics, I can cover topics starting from the Gauss-Markov assumptions to least squares regression, logit and probit regressions, time series econometrics, an econometric approach to machine learning and other aspects of undergraduate econometrics.

Similarly for mathematical economics, we can cover topics such as constrained optimisation, linear algebra, difference and differential equations and other undergraduate mathematical economics topics. I can tailor any tuition to your particular university course.

In the sessions we can also cover non-core modules. I have also tutored optional modules including development economics, trade, urban economics, industrial economics, financial economics, the economics of crime, and more. This includes students at universities such as Cambridge, LSE, UCL and Exeter.

I can also help as a dissertation adviser. Having achieved a distinction on my own Master's dissertation, I would be happy to advise students on dissertations. While students must write the dissertation themselves, I am able to offer advice and direction.

My experience of studying Economics at Cambridge and Economic Research at Cambridge at the Master's level has given me a detailed understanding of economic theory, both in terms of mathematics and intuition. My experience tutoring undergraduates has strengthened this further. I hope to be able to use this experience to help many more students.

Please kindly note that modules vary significantly from one university to another, particularly when it comes to optional modules. While this means time is required to adapt the content to suit how the university teaches the course, I ask students to be patient on this matter and to submit as many materials upfront as possible. This allows me to prepare diligently, in order to give as much help as I can.

I am able to tutor students looking for long-term help with undergraduate economics. I am also able to help on a shorter term, more intensive basis where requested. This includes students wanting a head start going into undergraduate economics.

Availability

As June 2024, I have regular slots available on Tuesday and Wednesday, afternoons and early evenings. Other slots such as on Thursdays may be available on a shorter term but not a regular basis, depending on other commitments.

If you're interested in my economics tuition, please feel free to reach out. Please kindly include in your message details about your situation and the desired frequency of tuition (for example weekly). If you're an A-Level student, it would be great to know your exam board too.

Fees

I charge £89 per hour of A-Level / IB Economics tuition. Degree level tuition is charged at a higher rate.

Please kindly note I only offer online lessons, as I frequently travel between the UK and Germany.

A Level, IB or degree level economics tuition comes with the following:
- Preparation in advance of the session. Each session is uniquely prepared according to the needs of each student.
- Setting and marking homework.
- Availability over email to answer questions from students and parents.
- Access to a Google Drive shared folder to store notes from our tuition sessions.
- For A-Level / IB Economics students: monthly detailed feedback to parents on session progress; use of practice questions or papers to help students get ahead; the option for students to submit school work outside of session time for marking and improvement, before final submission to their school teacher.
- For degree level economics students: I will read your university's lecture and problem set material that you can provide, in order to tailor the tutoring to your course; students can share in advance if they would like to focus on particular topics from lectures or problem sets; the option to mark problem sets or past paper attempts; if there are few past papers, I can also write a bonus practice paper to help students prepare for the exam.

Altogether this means that beyond the tuition sessions themselves, I put in additional effort to make the tuition more helpful to students.

Examples of students I have helped.

One A Level Economics student came to me about one year before the exam, when they were achieving grade E in their school tests. There were challenges with the quality of economics teaching in their particular school. We started with learning the course content basics through a question and answer approach in the sessions. For homework I set frequent practice questions to work on exam technique. Regular feedback on the homework led to large improvements in grades and the student's self-belief that they could do well in economics. This led to the student receiving an A for Edexcel A Economics A Level, a four grade improvement over the year.

Another A Level Economics student started regular tuition once to twice a week a few months before the exam. The student struggled with exam technique and some of the more difficult aspects of the Edexcel A course. As a result, they were scoring at a B grade in their school tests to begin with. We started the sessions by reviewing the student's work from school, showing the main ways in which they could improve the structure of their section B responses, such as the 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 mark questions. We went on to discuss 25 markers in section C. Every week I set practice questions as homework, for different areas of the course. This led to a significant improvement in test scores. This led to the student receiving an A* for Edexcel A Economics A Level.

You can find more examples of undergraduate and A-Level students that I've helped in the reviews section.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first became interested in economics while reading Freakonomics, the Economist and studying the Great Depression at about age 14.

Since starting university in 2015, I have been helping students understand economics by providing resources, preparing students for university admissions and offering advice on A Level Economics revision. My first professional tutoring session took place in 2019 and ever since, my goal has been to help economics students as much as possible!

My first professional tutoring session took place in 2019. Owing to the demand for my economics tuition, I was able to quit my job as an economist and work as a full-time economics tutor. Over this time I have helped several economics students improve their grades. For A-Level Economics students, seeing their grades improve during tuition from an E to an A or from a B to an A*, meeting their university offers. In the case of undergraduate economics students, during tuition we were able to improve their responses to achieve 1st and 2.1 grades. Making a difference through tutoring has motivated me to pursue tutoring further, in order to help many more economics students.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach economics, primarily to A-Level Economics students. My particular strengths are in helping students with the A Level Economics Edexcel A and AQA exam boards.

I enjoy discussing everything about economics, including any market to which economics can be applied! Any topic that students find interesting can be a lens through which to study economics. From video games to sports to fashion or food, we can learn economic theory through several different examples depending on students' interests.

In addition I have experience tutoring IB Economics students. In the past I have also tutored undergraduate students, on topics from microeconomics and macroeconomics to econometrics and optional modules such as public economics, labour economics, the economics of crime, development and trade.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The most inspiring teacher I have met is my mum! From her work as a teacher for other students, she has taught me how to explain ideas effectively, the importance of significant preparation for lessons and how to raise expectations and standards among students. Personally, she showed me the value of education and work ethic and encouraged me in my academic interests and abilities in mathematics, reading and science early on in my life. I credit any academic achievements to my mother's intervention and I am very fortunate for this.

Outside of teachers, my other role is my dad. He introduced me to economics by sharing economics books such as Freakonomics and magazines like The Economist. Having someone with whom to discuss economics news stories led to an interest in economics and allowed me to pursue my interest further. My father also showed me the value of patience, consistent hard work over time and humility. I credit any achievements in economics to my father's support from the start.

Perhaps most importantly, my parents showed me how to push through any naysayers and overcome any barriers in place from other teachers. Where a teacher tells you that you cannot achieve a certain grade, that represents an open invitation to prove them wrong. Outworking everyone in private and consistently can lead to excellent results over time. Now, through my tutoring and sharing online resources, I hope to lower the barriers to getting an education for as many students as I can.

At school, my teachers were a mixed bag in terms of the quality of teaching. I meet a lot of tuition students with teachers who are less effective. There are even some teachers who tell you that you cannot achieve certain academic goals. If you are in this position and don't have a role model teacher, while more independent work may be required, I firmly believe you can achieve any grade you put your mind to. You don't need to have a role model teacher, to perform well in or to be inspired by a subject.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Tutors should of course be knowledgeable about the subject. However in addition to this, they should be able to explain concepts to students, including in several different ways. Tuition requires being attentive to students' needs, focussing on concepts that students find difficult, planning sessions specifically to the students' requests and answering the students' questions.

Tutors should work outside of the sessions, in marking homework, providing feedback, planning sessions and where required, preparing resources.

Knowledge, not only about course content but also about how to apply knowledge to the exams, is critical. Exam technique is becoming a larger differentiator between students, particularly for A Level Economics. So inside-out familiarity with the exam boards as well as extra exam board specific resources, such as practice questions, will be critical. An attention to detail here can serve tutors well.

I think tutors should be decent human beings, including being helpful, respectful, friendly and encouraging. This also creates an environment where students feel most welcome to ask and answer questions. This comes alongside having high expectations for students and pushing students to do the best they can. Tutors should also be humble. If a tutor does not know the answer to a question, they should not pretend and hand wave away the question. Instead, admit a lack of knowledge, look up the answer and get back to the student after the session.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Doing lots of practice questions can help you do well in exams. However it's not as simple as just attempting lots of questions. You should also mark your answers or get someone else to mark them.

If there are few or no practice papers, then create your own questions! I created lots of questions for myself as a GCSE and A Level student and still create questions today for my A-Level Economics students. Practice questions on recent issues, including current affairs, can be much more engaging as practice material, particularly in economics.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One difficulty for students can be with the number of diagrams required for A Level Economics, particularly on the microeconomics side. Some students may not have learnt the diagrams in school too well. This can be a limiting factor for some students' grades. Without learning the diagrams first, it can be difficult to teach the remaining subject content in places.

So, in cases where students struggle with diagrams, we can start from scratch in learning a key diagram, then discussing the related course content. We can also go further on diagrams, including discussing how to explain diagrams, how to avoid diagram errors and how to level up diagrams for long essays.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passions are both economics and teaching. I was fortunate to study Economics at Cambridge for four years and to work as an economist. Economics is fascinating and can be applied to many different non-monetary, personal, social and of course monetary problems. I hope to pass this passion on to many more students.

Moreover, you can apply economics to any market you're interested in. Whether you spend your time on video games, fashion, sports, social media, film or any other interest, there is so much economics involved. As a tutor, this means I can relate economics back to the student's interests. So students can engage more with economics and are more likely to remember the content.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Each year I take on a small number of students. This allows me to focus on each student attentively, tailoring sessions, spending time marking homework and preparing for sessions outside of the lesson hour.

I have created Economics A Level practice questions and other resources used by hundreds and even thousands of students and teachers. This knowledge of exam technique benefits my tuition students directly, with resources being used for homework and session preparation, among other uses.

While I have been fortunate to have academic success in my own life, I also know how best to break down complex concepts for students and am always learning more about how students learn. We can also discuss economics university applications if students are looking for tips for the top UK universities.

The combination of academic expertise, how to teach, leveraging resources and high effort per student makes my tutoring quite helpful for the students I've tutored. I hope I can bring this skillset to many more students.
