In mathematics, the key to retaining information is to work with students while they perform the problem. To retain information effectively and avoid doing hours of practice problems, I tend to let the students attempt the problems themselves, and guide them in the right direction from there. This allows the student to use their own natural tendencies when solving problems rather than having to memorize brand new material.
