About Spencer

I am Cal Poly, SLO Class of 2017 graduate and incoming Class of 2021 J.D. candidate at the University of San Francisco School of Law. My undergraduate degree was in Spanish Language and Literature with a minor in Law and Society.

Although I have no previous tutoring experience, I have a proven background in Spanish Language as evidenced by my degree in Spanish along with the following transferable skills and experiences:

- Main translator (English to Spanish) of a 20-page legal legal-self help document
- 3-month study abroad program in Valladolid, Spain
- Teacher Aide volunteer at Pacheco Elementary, a bilingual, dual-immersion school.
- 9 years of formal Spanish classes including: Spanish Teaching and Research Methods, Spanish
Translation, and Advanced Spanish Literature.
- Current assistant Varsity baseball coach that gives me incredibly useful and candid insight of how high
schoolers approach their academics.

About the lesson

While employing common strategies such as catering to the individual student's needs, preferred learning styles, schedule etc. I will also strive to be efficient in selecting exercise and drills that most target the student's shortcomings/difficulties while also providing a well-rounded curriculum designed around the student's other needs.

My other teaching methodologies include but are not limited to:

- Creating a fun-relaxed environment for the student in order to generate excitement rather than dread
for tutoring sessions.
- Giving occasional quizzes that test the student the same way s/he is tested in school.
- Including writing, speaking, and reading exercises to achieve well-rounded progressions.

Finally, while some may think that because I am not a native-speaker I am a less-qualified tutor, I actually believe the opposite is true. Just like my students, I was born not knowing the language and had to overcome obstacles and devise studying/learning methods that allowed me to eventually become bilingual. My goal as a tutor is to give my students these same tips and tricks I accumulated over my nine years of learning the language in a way that is easy for them to understand and will ultimately help them achieve their goals in the Spanish language.
