About Yashar

My bachelor's degree was in Urban Studies and my Master's was in Urban and Regional Planning. I also did some architecture courses during my bachelor's degree. I was a curriculum designer for urban design and architecture at Victoria University. I had GIS and Remote Sensing analysis industry experience in Melbourne. I worked as a Research Fellow recently at Deakin University. I am currently working at local government and mainly attempting to integrate smart cities approaches into urban planning guidelines via usage of new technologies.

One approach to tutoring GIS is to first assess the student's current level of understanding and knowledge of GIS concepts and tools. Based on this assessment, the tutor can then create a customized lesson plan that addresses the student's specific needs and learning goals. My teaching methodology used in GIS tutoring may vary depending on the student's learning style and the specific GIS software or concepts being covered. However, some common techniques used in GIS tutoring include hands-on practice with GIS software, interactive exercises and quizzes, and real-world case studies.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I don't have a specific field of interest or engage in private tutoring. However, I can provide information and assistance on a wide range of topics, including urban planning, GIS, and remote sensing since I finished my doctorate degree and find out there is a need for helping many students to be able to solve their problems at different levels in different areas at various universities.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Urban planning involves the study and design of cities, focusing on land use, transportation, infrastructure, and sustainability. GIS (Geographic Information System) is a tool used to capture, store, analyze, and present spatial data, while remote sensing involves acquiring information about the Earth's surface using sensors. In these subjects, I can discuss various topics such as urban development, spatial analysis, data visualization, environmental planning, transportation systems, and more. I don't have personal preferences or dislikes, as my purpose is to assist and provide information on any relevant topic.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

To be honest, I don't have personal experiences or role models as I believe I should be a better version of myself every day. Furthermore, many individuals in the field of urban planning and related disciplines find inspiration from notable figures such as Jane Jacobs, Ebenezer Howard, and Kevin Lynch, who have made significant contributions to the field.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Qualities that are important for being a good tutor in my opinion including but not limited to:

Strong knowledge and expertise in the subject matter
Effective communication skills to convey complex concepts in a clear and understandable manner
Patience and the ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual students' needs
Being approachable and creating a comfortable learning environment
Providing constructive feedback and guidance to help students improve
Passion and enthusiasm for the subject, inspiring students to learn and explore further
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In the mid-20th century, the city of Curitiba in Brazil faced challenges with rapid urbanization and transportation issues. Instead of focusing solely on building more roads, the city's mayor, Jaime Lerner, introduced innovative solutions such as dedicated bus lanes, integrated land use and transportation planning, and pedestrian-friendly streets. These strategies transformed Curitiba into a model for sustainable urban development and public transportation, known for its efficient bus system and extensive green spaces.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Difficulties and challenges in the field of urban planning may include the following items:

Balancing competing interests and stakeholders in the planning process
Managing urban growth and addressing issues of sprawl and congestion
Incorporating sustainability principles and addressing environmental concerns
Adapting to evolving technology and data management in GIS and remote sensing
Keeping up with policy changes and regulations in urban planning
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is to assist and provide information, so you could say that my "passion" lies in helping students by answering their questions and providing valuable insights.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

What makes me valuable is my ability to provide quick and accurate information on a wide range of topics, including urban planning, GIS, and remote sensing. I can assist with answering questions, explaining concepts, providing examples, and helping users deepen their understanding of these subjects. Additionally, I can generate text, offer suggestions, and engage in discussions to enhance the learning experience.
