About Francis
I want you to understand an instruction well enough to use it when I am not beside you. If I ask you to change your bowing, I explain what we are listening for and how that movement might help. I welcome questions, including the ones that seem basic, because an unclear idea often becomes an unclear habit.
I value attentive repetition over repeating a passage simply to accumulate minutes. I would rather help you make one useful discovery in a few notes than send you through an entire piece without a purpose. I also leave room to experiment: sometimes comparing two possible approaches tells you more than immediately choosing the supposedly correct one.
I aim for a lesson atmosphere where you can play an unfinished attempt without embarrassment. I give specific feedback, recognize what is already working, and help you choose a manageable next challenge. Whether you are meeting the instrument for the first time or refining familiar repertoire, I want you to develop judgment alongside skill.

I connect what you hear with what your hands are doing. Instead of treating a scratchy note as a general mistake, I help you notice where it begins: bow contact, speed, pressure, or a change of string. We try one small adjustment, listen again, and keep the change that makes the sound easier to control.
I use short musical phrases to bring technique into context. A first melody can teach steady bowing and accurate finger placement; a more demanding passage can reveal how bow distribution, shifting, and phrasing work together. Returning students can rebuild comfortable habits without rushing, while experienced players can investigate the details that make a phrase sound intentional.
I shape practice around a clear question and an achievable result. Children might explore that question through imitation and short listening games; teenagers and adults might compare two recordings or mark a score. I balance music you enjoy with useful technical work, so you leave knowing what to practise, how to listen, and when to move on.
