About Derek

My approach is different, depending on my client's needs and English language ability. Conversation: We should agree on one or two topics to be discussed in an hour session. I try and agree in advance, so both I and the student have time to research or collect our thoughts on the topic. English pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension: I work with intermediate and advanced English learners using various textbooks and complimenting the lessons with my native English knowledge. Business Presentations: These classes are split into two sessions. During the first session, we define the content of the presentation and how it shall be presented. In the second session, the student shall present the material twice. In the first pass, I will make suggestions on how to improve presentation style, or pronunciation if required. In the second pass, the student will have the opportunity to practice the recommendations but will be required to answer "simulated" questions that are commonly asked in corporate meetings.

About the lesson

I am British and worked for General Electric (GE) as an Information Management professional for 27 years. I graduated in Electronic Engineering (B Eng) in England and I had the opportunity to live in Europe, USA, and Brazil. I have many years experience of communicating and presenting formal business environments. Besides teaching business English, I also enjoy helping English learners to improve their pronunciation and language understanding. Recently, I have had many requests for conversational sessions. I have found these sessions to be stimulating for myself and my students, as we have had the opportunity to discuss various topics such as living in Brazil as a "gringo", differences between North American and British English, slang and phrase meanings etc. I can speak Portuguese, but I purposely wrote this announcement in English, since I specialize in teaching intermediate and advanced students.

Por ser nativo, ele consegue identificar muito bem os pontos em que a pronúncia precisa ser melhorada e conhece muito bem as diversas regras gramaticais da língua inglesa. Ele se preocupa muito com o aprendizado dos alunos e cria materiais extras para tópicos nos quais o aluno tem mais dificuldade.

After the first free lesson, I kindly request that lessons are paid monthly and in advance. Although, I understand we all have busy lives, and you may not be able to attend a planned session, but please provide 24 hours advance notice of any class changes, or the session shall become chargeable.
