  • What motivates you to teach and why?

I believe that my knowledge and expertise are only useful if they are shared for the greater good of other people. It brings me great satisfaction when someone benefits from the skills that I possess and is able to make a positive change in their life because of me. I consider myself to be very result-oriented, and that's why I was drawn to teaching IELTS exam classes.
  • When did you start developing an interest in your subject area?

When I was young, I thought it was fun to correct people's language errors. As I grew up and became wiser, I realised that I had a gift that needed to be shared with the world so that others may benefit from it. It wasn't until I was in college that I realised, after being guided by my professors, that teaching English is something I should seriously consider. Funnily enough, teaching IELTS sprung forth from a disaster - my CELTA center lost my portfolio, and to make up for it, offered me a complimentary seat on their IELTS trainer course...and it was a blessing in disguise!
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of and why?

a-ssI think of my mum, who was also a teacher - she is the one that inspired me and motivated me to start teaching. Observing her and the impact she made on her students' lives was eye-opening. What's more, if she hadn't pushed me to ask local private institutions if they'd hire me as an English teacher (when I was 17!), I'd never have gotten to where I am today!
  • What is the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in mastering your craft?

Being a native speaker, I knew things, but didn't know why they worked the way they did - grammar, for example, was something I never actually thought about because I just "knew" what the right way to say or write something was. But when I was pursuing the CELTA, I was forced to think analytically and logically about language, something that I'd never done before. It was something I had to learn, but in the end, it made me a better teacher and an expert in my field.
  • In your opinion, what makes someone excel in your subject area?

There is no substitute for knowledge - in order to be a good English teacher you can't just skate by being a native speaker or having studied it at school. Many people think teaching English (or any language for that matter) is a piece of cake - which it absolutely isn't. You need to be able to differentiate between a verb in the past progressive and the present perfect if you were woken up at 3 AM. You need to be able to explain why you'd use the indefinite article and why you wouldn't use the definite article. That's how good you should be! You need to be able to understand how the entire system works. I'd recommend, at minimum, formal schooling in the English language and an in-person TEFL certification, preferably the CELTA. The damage that unqualified English teachers cause naive students is worrisome and must be curbed.
  • What would you say to a student who says, "This is too difficult, I give up!"?

I encounter this regularly. A task is only difficult if you don't try attempting it, or you have been given the wrong instructions. All you need to do is try it once more, but with the right kind of guidance. It's incumbent upon me to try new methods and ideas to make sure that my students find it easy to attempt and understand challenging new tasks and activities.
  • How does someone become a Super Teacher?

By being a super learner! I don't mean that you need to have been a straight A student when you were in school. This simply means having had learning experiences that changed you. A super learner understands the process of learning as he/she has been through it, and thus, is able to become a super teacher as he/she can easily guide students through the same process with ease. Another very important trait for a Super Teacher is empathy. If you can't put yourself in your student's shoes and walk a mile in them, you're not cut out to teach. In order to be able to fully help someone you need to not only understand their situation, but also feel how they possibly feel. Only then will you be motivated to give them the very best that you have to offer, as a teacher
