About Liam

I graduated from Italia Conti with 1st in Acting in 2017. After teaching accents and public speaking for a little over two years now I've seen how the tools and skills I learnt at drama school are so desperately lacking in the wider world.

Something clients will say often when they first start training with me is they had no idea they'd been speaking or breathing wrong their entire lives and they're quite surprised by this.

But it's not that what they're doing is 'wrong' it's just that they never understood the enormous wealth of possibilities they had within them all this time.

That's something I really love about this work. Anyone can take a dive into the practices I teach and it can completely transform the way that person sees themselves and they way they are seen by others.

I founded the Holistic Voice Academy to share those tools and insights. Follow the academy page on Linkedin or Instagram for regular tips on communication skills.

There’s a reason the English RP accent is the most desirable accent in the world. It inspires trust and grants authority to those who use it well.

But whether you want to lead a company, gain status and credibility in a pitch or just have your coffee order come out right for once... changing the voice is a strange and uncertain business to do alone.

Friends and family can be helpful in correcting you but unless you get professional help you are probably going to end up just feeling like you’re doing a weird fake voice that changes daily.

The goal of the training is to give you an authentic, genuine English accent that is technically precise and feels like your own voice.

Read on to find out more about the classes, the biggest areas we’ll focus on, and what’s included in the training.

You can book a free 30 minute consultation meeting here to discuss your goals for your accent and set you off on the right track:

(concealed information)

The biggest obstacle:

When you learnt your first language you learnt a set of mouth positions in order to make the sounds in that language. When you learnt English you learnt a new language which requires a new set of mouth positions for the new set of sounds.

The reason people struggle to learn a new accent is because they’re still using the same set of mouth positions they had in their old language to create this new set of sounds in the new language.

There are 44 phonemes (sounds) in the English RP accent. You’ll be shown exactly where your own accent differs from the English RP accent and taught precisely the correct positions of articulators, (your tongue, lips, jaw) in order to get the perfect English sound.

Sounding fake:

Most people who learn a new accent want it to be something that happens unconsciously. They want the voice to naturally change over time without them having to put on a ‘fake’ sounding voice. This is possible by learning the correct positions and practising diligently to ingrain these positions into your muscle memory.

The drills and practices I will teach you are a must if you want rapid change. When you have the proper practice technique the results come surprisingly fast but only if performed correctly and consistently. With only a few minutes of this practice every day you’ll be surprised at how much of the accent starts to stick without you having to constantly be monitoring the way you speak.

Rhythm:

Unfortunately, you can’t get the perfect accent only by working on each phoneme individually. You need to also learn how to transition between mouth positions in a way that sounds English too. English has a rhythm and musicality to it that’s a lot smoother than most other accents. It’s more legato than staccato. This way of moving the mouth also needs to become part of the muscle memory.

This, combined with the phonetics and general articulation training will have you speaking English beautifully aswell as precisely.

Spelling variations:

English isn’t like other Latin languages where you can just pronounce the letters on the page. It is pretty confusing and has a lot of rules for the phonemes and spellings that can be difficult to distinguish.
This is why we’ll cover every possible variation of spelling with each phoneme as we go through. For example, take the ‘ah’ or “bark” vowel. It has several different spellings: Heart, art, bath, alm, castle, clerk”. We’ll cover each variation for all the phonemes so you don’t get caught out.

Workplace vocabulary:

For those who want to learn English specifically for there career or workplace we use words that are relevant to those environments so you can put what you learn into immediate practice at the office. Take the ‘ah’ vowel once again for example. Instead of the above words we’ll study words and phrases such as “target market”, “hard bargain”, “marginal advantage”, “fast answer”.

Training with me also includes:

-Accent profile- a working document that is updated every class to include what we covered, the areas you need to focus on and the steps to carry out in practice to consolidate the lesson.

-WhatsApp access- to support you in your accent transformation I am available to you via whatsapp. Practising an want to check you’re doing it right? Send a video or sound clip to receive feedback. Want to check the pronunciation of a word or phrase for a meeting tomorrow? Send me a message and I’ll reply with a breakdown of the word.

-Phonetics- In our coverage of the phonemes you’ll learn how to use the phonetic alphabet so you can pronounce any word in English without having ever heard it before.

-Voice strengthening- Obviously articulation and pronunciation is a huge component to learning an accent and will improve greatly with this training. As will the other parts of the voice; resonance, breath and tension, which we will also cover at a basic level on our way through the course.

-Public speaking skills- If you decide you would like to work a little more on your speaking skills in general during the lessons we can pivot and focus more on that. How to have an engaging voice, storytelling, pitch, pause, tone, body language, interview skills. Any or all of these are available at anytime should you wish to improve these areas also.

-Tongue twisters and articulation drills for every phoneme.
-A complete vocal warmup sequence.
-Breath exercises to build strong support for your voice.
-Stretches and exercises to strengthen and relax the articulators.

FAQs:

How long till I start to see a difference? 12 weeks is a good bench mark but if you practice well you should feel the differences in less time. We record a piece of text before the first lesson so we can compare against it in the future to show you how much you have developed.

How long till I have the perfect accent? Realistically, at least a year if not more. It varies from person to person depending on how much English you already know, how strong your accent is, how much you practice, how you take to the classes. In most cases it takes several years to get a perfect accent that is indistinguishable to English ears. But don’t underestimate how much a you can change your accent in a few months of hard, consistent work.

Can you help me with my grammar? I can generally point out the most obvious mistakes but I don’t teach the English language and would recommend going to another tutor for comprehensive training.

I don’t think I have a hope. My accent is really strong. Have you taught anyone from the same place as me? Learning an accent is like learning a musical instrument. It doesn’t really matter how far off you think your accent is from English. We can still make improvements although a perfect accent might take longer and be more difficult to get.
