About John

I have completed three-years of a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and am pursuing an honors degree. Throughout my degree I have tutored in a range of subjects from elementary math to second year organic chemistry. Neuroscience also happens to be a great precursor to tutoring.

I do have information below on why that is the case, but for those who are interested in knowing more about me, I am involved with a lot of things. I have been playing chess for about 8 years now, and doing jiu jitsu for about 3 years. I was heavily involved with launching the tech project Geo, a keyboard component that was recently launched on kickstarter, and am working with another person on a project that aims to offer therapeutic interventions for seniors.

Why is neuroscience good for tutoring?

Neuroscience tests many components of the hard sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology), providing an apt basis for the technical components of tutoring. Neuroscience also includes a behavioural component that applies very nicely to academic coaching with lessons on learning and memory, and sleep, for example. Combined with my own experience applying this information, this will move you towards achieving your academic potential.

About the lesson

Overall, my aims as a tutor are to make things fit into a bigger picture. Especially in biology. My job as a biology tutor is to help students understand biology better, perhaps in a way they have not been exposed to.

Typically a lesson will involve students bringing questions to me, for explanation. Though, I have no problems creating a curriculum, this approach is more efficient because students can deal with the issues they have directly. If you just wanted to know about generating clonal lineages, then it wouldn't neccessarily make sense to discuss polypeptide planes. In other words, the structure of the lessons will vary depending on your needs.

I also offer academic coaching, which involves working on more general skills for academia, such as science writing and building study plans.
