About Mina

During my time at Baylor University, I gained unique, first-hand experiences working closely with disadvantaged groups. One of these experiences that left a lasting impression on me was serving as an undergraduate tutor in Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, and English. As a tutor, I had the opportunity to work with Baylor student-athletes, many of whom identified as first-generation. Although I grew up in an educationally disadvantaged system, I was fortunate to have a parent who had already pursued higher education and could therefore better help me adjust to college. As such, I wanted to help others who did not have this same background. Some of the most meaningful moments I had with this group of students included taking breaks from course instruction to plan weekly activities on Google Calendar or to decode cryptic lines of a FAFSA. Through this experience, I learned how to meet students where they are academically and emotionally, and work with them to transform areas of struggle into margins of growth. It was truly rewarding to witness the incredible success of many of my students. They achieved more than they ever thought possible, graduating college first in their families — some even becoming professional athletes. It is with this same framework that I am devoted to helping students reach their academic goals and strengthen their passions for learning and educational development!

About the lesson

In my 4 years spent tutoring high school and college students, I have learned that for many students (including myself), there is no 'one-size-fits-all' when it comes to learning new concepts. For example, note-taking and creating flashcards can be a powerful tool when reviewing content; however, in courses like Algebra or Calculus, these techniques aren't as efficient or effective. For this reason, my teaching methods and techniques are contingent upon the disciplinary. A general lesson plan I like to follow begins with a warm-up reviewing previously learned concepts. When the student has reached much comfortability with the old concepts, we will move on to learning new material. All lesson plans and agendas are structured under individualized curricula (meaning, I meet students where they're at).
