About Sophie

I am a full-time Research Technician in an immunology research lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. My work focuses on understanding the immune system, with a particular interest in T follicular helper cells. Prior to my current position, I worked in a clinical cytogenetics and genomics laboratory, where I gained experience performing laboratory testing using bone marrow samples and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) to help cancer patients move closer to a diagnosis and inform their treatment.

During my time at Dickinson, I developed a broad background in the biological sciences through courses in microbiology, microanatomy, genetics, ecology, mammalogy, and other areas of biology. I also completed coursework outside of my major, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, and a wide range of humanities, language, and classical studies.

In addition to my professional laboratory experience, I served as both a biology tutor and teaching assistant at Dickinson. These experiences taught me how to break down complicated scientific concepts, identify where students are struggling, and explain material in different ways depending on how a student learns best.

My goal as a tutor is not simply to help students memorize information, but to help them understand why something works and how different concepts connect. My ultimate objective is to help students develop the confidence to approach problems positively and give them the tools and resources they need to solve problems independently and successfully.

About the lesson

I believe the best tutoring is tailored to each individual student. Rather than simply memorizing information, I work with students to understand why concepts work, how they connect, and how to apply them to new problems.

I provide personalized study materials, practice questions, and unmanditory 'homework' or 'practice tests' to help guide students' thinking, prepare them for exams, and identify areas that need more attention.

During sessions, I encourage students to work through problems themselves while providing support and guidance when they get stuck. Whenever possible, I connect difficult concepts to real-world applications, familiar examples, or things students already understand.

Most importantly, I want students to leave tutoring feeling more confident in their ability to learn and grow. My goal is to provide the tailored guidance and support they need to master challenging topics and eventually approach problems independently.
