About Xin Lei

I am a friendly 26 year old girl from Singapore who loves cultural exchanges and dreams of travelling the world.

I am bilingual. I have interest in my mother tongue Mandarin even though English is the official working language in Singapore.

I have travelled to Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Korea (lived for 4 months), Japan, Nepal, New Zealand (lived for 1.5 years) and Australia (present).

My vision is to travel in the next few years, moving up the globe from Southeast Asia to Europe. I am currently based in Brisbane!

About the lesson

I can help you if you are either (1) a complete beginner to Mandarin or 3) know the basics of Mandarin but looking to improve your command of the language

I have prepared a crash course for beginners that consists of 12 1-hour long lessons using powerpoint presentation slides. Come join me for 3 months where I will help you to kickstart a lifelong journey in learning Mandarin!

Now, why should you consider me to be your Mandarin tutor-friend?

1. Mandarin proficiency
I am comfortable with conversational Mandarin as I speak it at home. I studied at a secondary school which produces one of the highest distinction rates for Chinese language in the nation. I attained A1 for Higher Chinese in my GCE O-Level examination and was pretty good at writing argumentative essays, with some of my work featured as model essays for my classmates.

2. Effectively bilingual
Besides Mandarin, I am proficient at English. I represented my school at the National Secondary Schools Translation Competition twice. I believe my greatest strength to be in grasping the nuances of words, especially with the variety of similar words in Mandarin that may confuse learners who lack contextual exposure.

3. International experience
Having travelled as a backpacker in the last few years, I have met people from around the world and developed a sensitivity for other cultures. I taught Mandarin to some of them, even those who had no knowledge at all. Besides, I am learning Korean and Japanese which have many interesting similarities with Mandarin that I can point out.

4. Creative, flexible teaching style
I like to take a creative approach to things, teaching included! I will take inspiration from anything related to deliver an enriching lesson. e.g. pop songs, customs, slangs, etc

5. Tutor-friend
Those whom I have taught describe me as a kind, patient and dedicated teacher. More than being a tutor, I hope to be a friend who will provide a personalised learning experience with your interests at heart.
