About Portia

Hi there! I’m a dedicated and passionate educator who believes that every learner has the potential to thrive when supported with patience, structure, and care. I approach each lesson with professionalism and a strong commitment to helping students feel capable, confident, and motivated. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working with learners from various backgrounds and learning abilities. This has taught me the value of flexibility, empathy, and the importance of creating a safe space where learners feel seen and heard. As a tutor, I bring a calm and encouraging presence, and I understand the importance of building trust, not only with students, but also with their families. You can count on me to be reliable, well-prepared, and consistent in helping your child reach their goals. Whether your child needs to strengthen their reading foundation, improve comprehension, or just learn to enjoy English a bit more, I’m here to walk that journey with them—with dedication and heart.

About the lesson

I am a qualified BEd English First Language teacher with 4 years of classroom experience, and I am passionate about helping learners build confidence in reading, writing, and overall literacy. My approach to tutoring is learner-centered, patient, and supportive. I adapt each lesson to meet the specific needs and learning pace of the student. My lessons are engaging and structured around building strong reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills, with a particular focus on literacy development. I often incorporate interactive reading activities, visual aids, and real-life examples to make English both enjoyable and relatable. I am proficient in English and also speak Sesotho and IsiZulu which allows me to explain difficult concepts more clearly when needed. A typical lesson with me includes: A short warm-up to revise previous work A focused reading or language activity Targeted practice with feedback A short recap and mini-assignment or reflection activity My lessons are best suited for: Primary, intermediate phase and Senior Phase learners (Grades 3–9) Learners who struggle with reading or comprehension English First Additional Language learners needing extra support. Any learner who needs a calm, structured space to improve their English skills I believe that every child can grow with the right support—and I’m here to walk that journey with them.
