Under her highly skilled, patient and good-humoured guidance, I made exceptional progress, successfully working through HSK levels 5 and 6 (although I never sat the exams). As a native English speaker, avoiding common pitfalls in Mandarin can be incredibly challenging. Linda has an innate ability to spot these areas; as the Chinese idiom goes, 知错能改 (recognising your mistakes enables you to correct them) is essential for true progress (i.e. correcting my ju, xu, yu, ji, qi,xi pronunciation and emphasising tones) If you are not using the Chinese way of speaking you aren’t speaking Chinese . She patiently refined my pronunciation, my word selection and deepened my structural understanding of the language. Beyond grammar and vocabulary, she provided invaluable cultural context, teaching me what it truly means to live in China and how the Chinese thought process and speech is affected by the culture.
