About Ivana

I am an engineering student with a Bachelor's and Master's, but a lot of my experience has been with teaching. Throughout university, I taught math, physics, and engineering subjects at the "Smart Center" on campus. I worked with Varsity Tutors tutoring middle and high schoolers as well. I love my work and it gives me great pride whenever my students return more confident and succeeding after they had felt they couldn't. My job is to teach and inspire confidence.

About the lesson

My experience with various students across the years has taught me a lot: -Teaching will depend on your goals (passing an exam, learning basics, overcoming certain problems) -Each problem and theory can be approached in different ways; my job is to find the one that works best for you -The schedule will depend on your goal and pace and level of education -Extra problems for offline work can be given if you want the extra practice -I understand the frustration of this process and I can assure you, you can overcome it with my help

I have been studying together with Ivana at Politecnico di Milan, we were doing the same Master Degree program in Management Engineering. During our time there we worked in the same team on numerous projects and there are some particularly interesting things I noticed about her: she is a very wise person with a structured approach to doing things, she is really good at mentoring and explaining complex concepts to people (it was especially helpful for several mathematical models we had in one of our projects) and most important - she is super kind and patient, which was particularly pleasant! All in all, I think Ivana is one of a kind, so I strongly recommend taking some lessons from her even if you don't require in-depth knowledge in math at the moment!

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I actually fell into the profession by accident. I started off in university tutoring at the Smart Center Tutoring center on campus and I fell in love with it. When my students kept coming back with stories of success and all the new connections I made really made it all worthwhile.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Most of my tutoring is concentrated around Mathematics of all levels, a topic I have come to understand through and through. However for some reason the chapter of Matrices always sets me back a notch.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
I think one of the teachers that really pushed me to keep doing this was my electric circuits professor in university. Once he knew some students went to me for help, he made it feel like I was doing one of the most important jobs out there, the extra support that most students might need but can't easily find.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience and understanding and deep knowledge of the material. Since all students are different and have ways of connecting and learning new information, tailoring the tutoring methods according to each student is key.

Never think learning has one path. Education is not about following a certain method but finding a way that works for you.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
I think in any subject, there is always room for improvement especially as teaching methods change with time, there is a challenge to tutor according to each school's requirements especially when they are very specific.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I've always loved math and engineering but throughout my career I realized I belong in the management side of projects, organizing them from A to Z and coordinating between various teams, customers, and companies.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?
Honestly, what makes me a Superprof is my students' genuine happiness once they realize the subject is not that difficult and there is nothing wrong with them. They just needed the right tutor and confidence boost.
