I have a degree in Linguistics and French and a TESOL certificate. I have 7 years of experience as an ESL teacher and tutor. I have taught all ages and levels. I recently spent a year in Tokyo, Japan teaching English to children and adults both in-person and online.

I base my classes on my students' interests and goals. I am flexible with my lessons and will change activities if they aren't working. I like to be creative and make my lessons as fun as possible. I try to vary the types of lessons as well. One day will be a writing-focused lesson and the next will be a role play. I also like to incorporate games into each lesson if I can.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

    I have always had an interest in languages. I went through the French Immersion program from kindergarten to grade 12. I also studied Spanish for 5 years. I decided to pursue Linguistics to learn more about language and how it works. I love learning and also enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. Language is fascinating and there is so much to learn.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

    I have been an ESL teacher for 8 years now and I find it rewarding to help people learn and improve their English skills. As a speaker of a second and third language I understand the difficulties of learning a new language. It can be challenging!
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

    I like tutoring as it's an opportunity to be one-on-one with a student or in a small group. This allows me to really get to know students on a personal level and tailor my classes according to their needs and interests. I have taught large classes and one-on-lessons both in Canada and in Japan. My experience has taught me to be aware of different learning styles and cultural differences. I have worked with young children all the way up to seniors and I am comfortable working with any age group. I plan lessons that leave room for being flexible and will change my plans based on the student's progress in the lesson. I can easily speed up or slow down a lesson as needed.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

    My middle school social studies teacher is the one who inspired me to be creative with my lessons. This teacher always tried to involve a fun activity with each unit that was taught and would give the class something to look forward to at the end of each week. When we had a test coming up we would play a game to help us review and have a friendly competition. I now always try to use games in my classes either as a review or as a break near the end of class.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

    My keys to success are to never give up. Keep trying until you succeed and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. When studying for a test see if you can explain the concepts to a family member or friend(someone who isn't taking the class). If you can explain it to someone then you should be able to remember it for the test. Set yourself time limits for working or studying because taking breaks is important. When we schedule breaks, it helps us to stay focused. Don't forget to stand up and move around too. Give yourself deadlines before the actual due date so you have extra time if something goes wrong and reward yourself when you complete a task. Find something you can do to relax and then go back to work later. Choose one thing you need extra help on and focus on it until you feel that you've mastered it. Then choose something else. I hope these help you in the same way that they helped me.
