About Brendan

I am a teacher and physics education researcher. I have a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in physics. I have taught physics, math, chemistry, geology, and robotics at the high school and college levels, at multiple institutions. Over the course of 7 years, I have worked with over 700 students in various roles as a classroom teacher, lab instructor, and personal tutor. During my time as a high school teacher, 20+ students of mine have pursued careers in science or engineering with direct contribution to my teaching. I completed a Research Thesis in the field of physics education and have a research supported understanding of how students best learn and apply concepts in physics and mathematics.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is based entirely on the student experience. I believe that students must engage with material through experiential learning and application to real world problems. As a tutor, I believe instruction must be led by the student first. As the student, it is important that you take charge of your learning. I will offer structure to assist you in understanding, but it is on you to make the leap. This means that I will not just simply provide you with practice problems and an answer key, or walk you through each problem step by step. You will work on problems on your own, and I will be there to assist you when you get stuck, or to correct you when you make a mistake. And mistakes are fundamental to the learning process. Listening to mean explain something correctly is not nearly as beneficial as trying to answer a question yourself, even wen you get it wrong. I am an expert in identifying the source of your errors, and helping you to fix your misconceptions and strengthen your foundational knowledge of the topic.

I am well suited to teach students at the middle school, high school, and college levels. My rates vary depending on the level of tutoring needed, as well as the student's level of comprehension. These effect the time and preparation necessary to ensure students receive the highest quality of education, which is my goal.
