About Jefferson

I am a life-long photographer and artist. I worked as a professional freelance photographer in Baltimore, Maryland, for over twenty years, and have been published locally, nationally, and internationally as well. I won several photojournalistic and advertising awards during my professional career. I specialized in editorial & entertainment photography. I currently manage the Photography Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. I am a world traveler, and have travelled with students overseas for several photography trips.
During my freelance career, I had the privilege to photograph many musicians and bands as they performed live. I have photographed The Police, U2, The Rolling Stones, Jack White, The Wu Tang Clan, Smashing Pumpkins, The Who, Public Enemy, ZZ Top, Amy Winehouse, Jay-Z, and Metallica just to name a few. I use these experiences to discuss ways to watch for, and how to anticipate, the decisive moment to take a photograph.
I prefer a lively give & take with my students. I want you to ask questions, and I want to give you the room to ask me anything. I like a class session to work more like a conversation. I look forward to meeting you, and helping you get the most out of your photographs.

About the lesson

I tend to use my previous experience in the darkroom, classroom, and computer lab to inform my lessons. I take a methodical, step-by-step process that builds on your photographic knowledge like a pyramid.
As a freelance photojournalist (for over 20 years), I bring the experience of being a professional photographer completing assignments for clients. As a 10+ year photography instructor (on a college level), I am able to offer instruction on camera operation, film processing, scanning, darkroom printing, digital printing, and offer in-depth critiques about your artwork and progress as a student.
In my basic digital photography class I will discuss camera operation, camera parts and their function, how to capture the images you want, and how to process the images into final photographs for output on a digital printer. We will explore design elements such as line, shape, texture, repetition, contrast, and others. A heavy emphasis will be placed on learning techniques involved with creating strong visual compositions.
My approach will teach you basic photographic skills, while sharing my experiences as a professional photographer. You will learn to have fun with your images, while making them stand out with strong visual composition.
