About Andrew

Winner of the LSE Economics Teacher award, previously studied at Oxford University, and featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 for my work in education.

I dropped out of school at 16 believing I was “too dumb” to understand was going on in class, but went on to self-study my way to 4 A*s at A Level (98.2% average) — winning the Harvard Prize for highest grades in the year and offers from LSE & Cambridge University!

At university, I skipped all my lectures but, once again, graduated with the highest mark out of 1400+ students, winning the Economics Examiner Prize and the Rishi Madlani Award, alongside the highest marks in Industrial and Macroeconomics, and 99th percentile in the GRE.

Turns out, I wasn’t “dumb” at all, but bad explanations and ineffective learning techniques were holding me back.

Experiencing the transformative impact of great explanations and effective learning inspired me to help other students.

My dream is to complete degrees in every subject — from evolutionary biology to astrophysics — and share what I learn with others!

Teaching background:

• LSE Class Teacher Award for "excellent teaching" and "outstanding student feedback"
• Featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 for my work in education
• Tutored 200+ students across all major UK universities, including Cambridge & Oxford
• Taught 100k+ students via my online A Level & university application courses

Academic prizes:

• Economics Examiner Prize: highest overall mark (87% average)
• Rishi Madlani Prize: highest mark (91) in Macroeconomic Principles
• 99th percentile GRE: 334/340 (VR and NR) and 6/6 (writing)

• 4 A*s in self-studied A Levels offers (98.2% average)
• Harvard prize for highest AS Level grades in the year
• 11 A*s stars at GCSE, winner of the GCSE and Business Prize

• ifs Young Business Writer of the Year: £500 prize, national competition judged by Editor of The Times
• RES Young Economist of the Year: £250 prize, international competition, judged by Nobel Prize winner

Professional background:

• Co-founded an AI-education startup, and scaled to 100,000+ A Level students
• Co-founded UK’s largest online university application support site

Over the last 10 years, I've taught 200+ students, helped 100,000+ students through my online courses, and accrued ~10,000 hours of teaching experience.

My approach to tutoring is results-driven and grounded in the educational neuroscience of how students really learn.

We'll use a full suite of learning techniques — from mastery learning to spaced repetition, Socratic questioning, generation, the testing effect, active recall, mnemonics and more.

But it all starts with reverse engineering your exam. Once we understand the mechanics of your exam, scoring 100% is often no more difficult than following a few well-practised steps.

I can also help with coursework projects, dissertations and university admissions — previously cofounding the UK’s largest online university applications support site.

Find out more about Andrew

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was 17! I started helping my friends and younger students who couldn't understand maths and economics the way schools teach it. I made it intuitive, using current real world examples, and after seeing the results I was inspired to continue and become the best teacher possible.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Maths, Economics and Entrepreneurship. I love helping students see the intuition behind academic theories and help wannabe entrepreneurs get off the ground and start the company they've always wanted to build.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a lecturer at LSE who taught me about Socratic teaching: instead of telling students that X is the answer, you ask students subtle questions to get them to work out the answer themselves until finally they reach this wonderful "Aha!" moment.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, a deep understanding of cognitive science, the ability to rapidly deconstruct a syllabus and reverse engineer an exam, clarity of communication, and great interpersonal skills.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

With economics, I started off terribly. I didn't get any of the intuition - I just saw lines on a graph and big words. But when I got to see what's behind all the fancy academic pretense, I found a beautiful subject able to capture and model complex human behaviour with immense simplicity.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for learning. I've learned chess, portrait art, boxing, chess boxing (yes, this is a real thing!), several languages like Spanish and Tamil; I'm now learning the piano, music production, starting my own podcast - I just love learning new skills.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

10,000 hours of experience as an award-winning teacher at LSE and private tutor for almost 10 years now! Above that, for whatever reason, I just really care about helping students do well - you'd think I cared more about the exam than they did. And I just love doing things the best way possible - finding optimal revision strategies, solving problems, "hacking" exams - I just love it!
