About Rod

I have spent almost 20 years living in Spain and mostly Mexico. Most of that time has been spent teaching English to Spanish speakers but also Spanish to American nationals. Americans are fascinated by the Spanish language. Huge expanses of the United States once belonged to Mexico hence the proliferation of Spanish place names Los Angeles, San Francisco etc. I have spent most of my life teaching something, including tennis, English and Spanish. I hold a Spanish language degree specializing in translation, Spanish/English both ways. I also hold a certification in the teaching of English as a second language.

About the lesson

Most students are looking to understand and be understood. Basic sounds are essential to this equation. One of the biggest frustrations for Spanish speakers learning English is the irregularity of our pronunciation. Spanish is much more consistent in the way the vowels are pronounced so much less frustrating in that respect. Obviously we need to learn some grammar and some vocabulary to get us off to a start but from that point on I will generally try to encourage conversation. Students have usually heard Spanish expressions e.g hasta la vista, hola or adiós and I like to incorporate anything they already know and expand on it. I truly believe that we all have our own quirks which can trigger memory in language. Some people learn from listening to songs (Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias Luis Miguel) Each individual will have his/her own unique path. I hope to guide you.
One clear advantage I believe I have is that my native language is English. This means that I, unlike the native Spanish speakers, understand and empathize with the obstacles you face in listening to and speaking Spanish. I also have clearly understandable solutions to these obstacles.

No difference in price for different levels. If the group were more than 4 people I might charge a little more.
