About Nishana
Prior to my current career aspirations in the legal field, I enjoyed seven years of academic and professional experience in the arts and heritage sector.
In terms of my academic background in the field, I hold a Masters in History of Art (2012, Birkbeck College). My specialist subject was late nineteenth century French visual culture and qualified with a high Merit in 2012.
With respect to experience, I have worked in gallery education at institutions such as the Serpentine Galleries, Ben Uri Gallery and Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, where learners have included both students and adults. I have also worked as a History of Art Tutor for second year undergraduate students.
I also have extensive public speaking experience on art history related topics to both academic and non-academic audiences.
Due to the overlap in subject areas, I am also confident in tutoring the following,
- History of Photography,
- History of Architecture,
- Feminist theory.

Art history is all about ‘looking’.
In order to improve confidence in ‘looking’, and ultimately assist Tutees in carving out their own interpretations of artworks, I find that a reading group approach fuelled by lots of visual aids to supplement relevant literary references is key. Aside from placing artworks within historical and cultural contexts, this discussion based approach teases ideas out of the act of ‘looking’ and assists in improving the Tutee’s confidence in expressing their interpretations.
An understanding of art historical methodologies is of course crucial for the Tutee’s understanding, but I find it best to approach the theory once the Tutee is fully at ease with the art at hand.
