About Carlo

Professional experience:
I am a qualified Architect with over 10 years of experience in the field, I had the opportunity to work in several international offices including Grimshaw, SOM London, and Coop Himmelb(l)au – with work experience in the US, UK, Italy, and Austria.

Education:
I am a qualified Architect (Part 3), I completed both my MArch / Part 2 and Part 1 studies at the Architectural Association; achieving a commendation for my 5th-year Environmental and Technical Studies thesis concerning the fabrication and deployment of temporary structures.

Tutoring:
I have been tutoring since 2020, I have experience working one-to-one and lecturing larger groups of 10-15 people in local Design Schools across London. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and coming from different backgrounds, each one reaching out to me in order to help them pursue their own interests and passions. Aside from freelance tutoring on Superprof, I previously coordinated the Part 3 Support Team at Grimshaw - which aimed to help Part 2s achieve their professional qualification. More recently, I joined the Architectural Association's Mentoring Programme, to be able to share my knowledge and experience with 3rd and 5th-year students, as well as help them with their portfolios and CVs to secure a job after graduating.

My one-to-one sessions are typically structured to allow students to briefly explain to me what they would like help with.
After that, I provide feedback and suggestions, detailing how I may be able to help and which areas I think should be prioritised and tackled first.
This is then followed by a two-way conversation on how to proceed and improve the ongoing work.

Here are some of the things I can help you with:
- Concept and Design Development: Elaborating your project brief and discuss together possible options on how to develop your work.
- Software Tutoring: in order to improve your 2D and 3D modelling skills with software, including Rhino, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and the Adobe CC Suite.
- Visualisations (Renders) and Post-Processing: using software such as V-Ray, Enscape, and TwinMotion, helping you export stunning visuals to complement your project(s).
- Digital Fabrication Techniques: using machines such as laser cutters, FDM and SLA 3D printers, and CNC, to transform your digital models into physical realities.
- BA / MArch Dissertation (Thesis): from layout to structure, brainstorming topics, and reviewing the text and providing overall feedback on content and legibility.
- Portfolio and CV Review: either for university or job applications and interviews; helping you produce a high-quality and professional set of documents to improve your chances of success.

  • Can you tell us about the first time you realised you were interested in architecture?

The spark came at the beginning of my last year of high school. I had to figure out what I wanted to do
after I graduated. I love travelling and I’ve always been fascinated by the variety of architecture around the
world. That’s when I decided to study architecture.
  • 2) What is the building/construction that marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

There are countless buildings and projects which I keep close at heart, every time I fall in love with a
different one. Among these, the 30th St Mary Axe building in London by Foster and the MAXXI Museum
by Zaha are two of the ones I personally feel more attached to.
  • 3) Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the architecture realm.

Architecture surrounds us everywhere, everyday. No matter our age, our nationality, our preferences,
Architecture is one of those things which is always present. It is part of our culture as human beings and is
    a fundamental part of society.
  • 4) Do so-called ‘Starchitect', such as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Bjarke Ingles, among many others, inspire you or do you have other role models?

Starchitects are always the people us - young architects and students - look up to and get inspired by their
uniqueness. Each one has it’s own style and personal touch, something that distinguishes him or her from
the rest of the crowd. Looking at others’ work is one of the best ways to improve one’s work.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Throughout the many years architecture school, I have spent countless nights working on my projects. ‘Allnighters’ are kind of a initiation rite for all students in the field. Despite not enjoying going to sleep an
hour at 7AM to present a project at 9AM, I never regretted choosing this path as I love what I do.
  • 6) What would you say to a person in front of a modern building who says that “I prefer more traditional architecture”?

Just like art, there are many different styles and typologies. Preference is completely personal, no one has
to justify it! Many times I think of buildings as if they were artworks in a huge museum which we call ‘city’. It
is very unlikely that you’ll love every single painting in a museum; variety is a good thing.
  • 7) What are your other passions, related or non-related to architecture?

I enjoy working in many fields related to the architecture realm, many times utilising the skills I obtained in
architecture school for other purposes such as graphic design and digital fabrication. As a matter of fact,
aside from being an architectural designer, I work as a freelance graphic artist and also teach digital
fabrication techniques, such as 3D printing, here on Superprof.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in architecture?

I would refrain from defining myself as a ‘Super’-prof, as I still have a long way to go (haha). However I can
say I love to include other people and share my passion with them, utilising my knowledge to inspire
others and help them achieve their goals.
