About Dash

I believe anybody has the capability to make great music — they just haven't found a method that inspires them. I didn't think I could play until I heard the Ramones, and their raw expression is what helped me feel that I could do it too.

The key is to figure out what you want to express, what inspires you, and that passion will drive you to learn whatever you need to learn to make it happen. Theory and technique still matter, but you can learn them as you need them in a way that makes you feel emotionally connected to them, instead of like you're reading them out of a textbook.

I work by ear, shapes, and patterns before notation. We will use songs and sounds you actually listen to, and pace each lesson so creating is always fun, but you're still learning in the process.

My psychology background shapes how I teach: I believe your mental state is the most important aspect of learning. You learn better when you're in flow, and you feel better when you're expressing what's inside of you. I am also a strong believer in meditation and mindfulness as a tool for strengthening your intuition as a key tool in the creative process.

About the lesson

My Core Principles:

Expression first. Every unit ends in something you've made, not just a series of exercises you've learned.

Enjoyment is the heart. Material is chosen from what you already listen to.

Flow over grind. Lessons are paced to you so the challenge is just hard enough to focus and inspire, but easy enough to keep going.

Ears before eyes. Listening, copying, and improvising are prioritized over notation or understanding every technical aspect of what we're doing (unless you want that!)

Theory on demand. Each concept is introduced as the answer to a question we run into in the course of making something that inspires you.

Lesson Structure:

Arrive (5 min): Check in, tune or open the project, play or listen to something from the week.

Review (10 min): What you practiced or continued working on, I give feedback on what's working and what needs to be fixed.

Learn (15 min): One new skill or concept, tied to the current piece we're working on.

Build (20 min): Practice the new concept through playing, writing, sound-design, or arranging together.

Plan your week (10 min): Work together to set goals for the next week of independent practice and the next session.
