About Mekonen
I have a Ph. D in Electrical Engineering specialization in Control Systems and two Master of Science degrees, one in Applied Physics and the other in Electronics Engineering. I have also an advanced graduate certificate in industrial computerized control modeling of automated system.
Currently I am working In the United States Patent and Tread mark office (USPTO) as a Primer Patent examiner. Prior to working at the USPTO, I have taught Applied Mathematics, Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering courses at different universities in the USA for 5 years. Specifically I have taught Mathematics at University of Massachusetts at Boston, Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics at Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston and Mathematics at Northern Illinois University Illinois. During my five years of teaching experience, I have taught a wide range of undergraduate courses, in small and large classroom setting, in the area of mathematics, physics and engineering, and have got a chance to meet students with a broad range of needs, knowledge, and cultural backgrounds.
My duet at USPTO is examining patent applications in the area of Image Analysis, Machin Learning (artificial intelligent), Image segmentation and Pattern Recognition. I have also worked as trainer in the Patent Training academy. In the Academy I trained 25 junior patent examiners.

Experience: From my experience I learned that students could learn Math and Physics by doing problems, by attempting to find solution, and by reflecting on previous problems and their solutions. I strongly believe that the hurt of mathematics and physics , particularly at lower level course, lies in problem solving skill. To this end I assigned an appropriate load of homework exercise and devoted a considerable portion of my lecture to solving similar problems at the blackboard. In particular, I teach my students to make the habit of consciously following step- by step (break the problem down in to less complex one) methodology for every problem. This analytical skill helps a student to present his or her result in a form of understandable by others, and useful to himself or herself later when the material is not fresh in his or her mind.
Pre-lecture preparation is very important. Students will do better in any course, and learn more, if they have read through the material before coming to class. To this end, I always post my lectures one or two days in advance in my web site, and I strongly advise my students to read before come to class. At various time during the lecture I will give class work, and I will encourage the students to collaborate each other. I encourage the student to ask questions and I give the opportunity to participate in the class.
Homework: To be sure that my students understand my lecture at the end of each class period’s homework will be assigned. Homework is due at the beginning of the next class. This work will be graded, returned and reviewed during the following class. Each homework plays key role in student success
Test and Quizzes. There is a special session for review for every major test. To reduce the students’ anxiety about the test, I post on the web a sample test with solution two days before the test day
Attendance: Attendance in my class is mandatory. I expect the students to be in class and to turn in their work every day. Students can't learn if they are not physically in the classroom. It has been my experience that the students who don't do well in my classes are the same students who have excessive absences and who turn in next to no homework.
Conclusion: I strongly believe that by creating a positive learning environment, building good rapport with students, exercising patience when teaching, and employing multiple teaching strategies, we can alleviate our students’ fear of mathematics and promote student success.
