About Salome
Hello! My name is Salome. I’m an Afrikaans tutor with a lifelong passion for language and communication. After spending over 45 years in the automotive industry, I made the decision to follow my true calling: teaching Afrikaans. I earned my TEFL certification during the 2020 pandemic, but my teaching journey began even earlier — in 2019 — when I started tutoring students and saw first-hand the difference it made. I pride myself on being focused and offering one-on-one support. I offer Afrikaans lessons to learners of all ages and levels — whether you’re a complete beginner, a student needing help with schoolwork, or an adult looking to develop conversational skills. My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and adapted to your unique pace and goals. Whether you’re preparing for exams, relocating to South Africa, or simply want to connect more deeply with the Afrikaans language and culture, I’m here to guide and support you every step of the way.

In our first lesson, I begin with a short assessment to evaluate your current level of Afrikaans and identify any problem areas. This helps me create a personalised lesson plan that targets your weaknesses while reinforcing your strengths — because maintaining what you already do well is just as important as improving where you’re struggling.
I am fluent in both Afrikaans and English, and I’m happy to teach in the language you’re most comfortable with.
Each lesson is carefully planned based on your needs, and I always come prepared with structured activities and practical exercises. Homework is an essential part of my approach — it helps reinforce what we cover in class and gives you the chance to apply the language independently.
Through my experience, I’ve seen that real improvement comes from consistent personal effort. Students who actively engage with the language — by completing homework, reading simple Afrikaans books, and practicing regularly — see the best results. For learners who may be underperforming (for example, achieving below 70% at school), my lessons can still provide meaningful support, but progress depends on your commitment outside of lessons as well.
My role is to guide, support, and motivate you — but your effort is what turns learning into long-term success.
