About Esme
I am a violin tutor with over 8 years of experience and hold an Associate of Music in String Performance with a focus on violin. My passion lies in Nordic folk violin traditions, including Norwegian Fiddle, Swedish Fiddle, and Klezmer music. I specialize in teaching ornamentation techniques, rhythmic bowing patterns, and ear-based learning to help students connect deeply with these styles. In my lessons, I use folk jam tracks and drone tuners to create an immersive learning environment. This approach helps develop your listening skills and sense of timing while making practice fun and engaging. I focus on repertoire-based instruction, guiding you through traditional tunes that bring these rich cultural sounds to life. My teaching style encourages learning by ear, which is essential in folk music, allowing you to internalize rhythms and melodies naturally. Whether you’re new to violin or looking to explore folk styles, I tailor each lesson to your pace and interests. My teaching approach focuses on helping you explore improvisation on the violin in non-classical styles like jazz, folk, and world music. I guide you through creating melodies over chord changes and developing your own unique improvisational voice. This method encourages creative freedom and spontaneous musical expression, so you can feel confident playing in any setting.
I work closely with The Worship Singer and The Musical Theatre Enthusiast, helping them unlock their musical intuition and expressiveness. Together, we’ll explore different scales, rhythmic ideas, and phrasing techniques that fit these styles. You’ll learn how to listen deeply and respond in the moment, building your skills to improvise naturally.
My lessons balance structure with flexibility, making room for experimentation while building solid musical foundations. I provide clear, step-by-step guidance, plus plenty of encouragement to help you grow. Whether you’re new to improvisation or looking to expand your skills, I tailor lessons to your goals and pace.
