About Elise

Licences de Lettres Modernes - Philosophie, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne 2015
Master in Modern and Contemporary European Philosophy, University of Luxembourg 2017
Certificate in teaching English as a Foreign Language, TEFL Rome 2019

I have two years of experience teaching private classes (academic tutoring, French and English) and have taught for one year and a half at a Luxembourgish high school, which allowed me to gain experience with the expectations and functioning of the Lycées Classiques, as well as with the difficulties young students can experience in a multilingual environment.

French and Dutch are my mother tongues, and I have spoken English fluently since I was fifteen. I understand and speak German and Luxembourgish very well, and also speak some Italian.

What I enjoy the most: both improving a student's mastery of a language and their intellectual skills or knowledge of the world (as well as their self-confidence).

I only accept students with whom I can work long-term and on a weekly basis, and it is important to me we get along on a personal level: these conditions are essential for the student to progress.

I offer courses for the following students:
- Primary or secondary students who are experiencing problems either in English or in French.
- High school students who are having problems with analyzing, interpreting or commenting on texts, or with writing more complex pieces of work.
- High school students who want to prepare themselves as well as possible for their future university classes.

My method varies according to the student’s individual profile and goals, but these are the essentials:

English & French:
- Once the grammar has been acquired (which takes a lot less time than vocabulary), we continue to revise it of course, but the key towards great improvement is to focus as much as possible on the acquisition of new vocabulary and expressions.
- Playful vocabulary learning methods involving movement and images, repeated and spaced out quizzes so that the student remembers the meanings of the words better.
- Choice of texts appropriate to the tastes, level and age of the student.
- I encourage the student to take an interest in French and American/British culture and include cultural elements as much as possible in my courses and in my homework (music, art, films, pop culture, literature…)
- Ideally, the student writes a short piece every week for me, which I then correct.

Improvement of analytical and interpretative capacities
- Here we work on more difficult texts that contain valuable ideas that will both challenge and emotionally involve the student.
- How to read a text or a book? Many student can read only on a literal level, but don’t really know how to reflect on a text and make it their own. I give them the tools to become more proactive in their learning.

- The student will receive books or texts from me and will have to debate on them with me: can the student correctly represent complex ideas? Can they link them to their own experience? The more a student progresses the easier it becomes to remember and assimilate new knowledge, so this process, even if it takes time, can be a very rewarding experience for the student.
- Together with work on analytical and critical skills, we work on the student’s capacity to clearly express their ideas in writing.
- I also try to stimulate the student’s intellectual curiosity as much as possible, by recommending or lending them books and making them discover intellectual content on social media.

Sometimes, the student wishes to combine the two approaches as much as possible (so an improvement of both linguistic and intellectual skills), which is of course entirely possible.

Details

If people ask me to work more intensely with the student, it is possible for me to give them a short written assignment by text message five days a week, which I then correct.

If a student cancels less than 24 hours in advance, 50% of the course is still due. When I cancel less than 24 hours in advance, we try to reschedule the course that same week for 50% of the normal price. If we can’t find a second time slot that works for the both of us that week, the lesson is cancelled.
