About Ria

I am a 4th year Chemistry student at the University of Manchester and have secured a placement with an academic at the university. I have maintained first class grades in every year of my degree and have demonstrated excellent literacy and numeracy skills via my A levels and modules I have taken at university. I have previously tutored younger students during my A level years and they felt much more confident in their exams after the tutoring. I also happen to teach dance classes as I am president of a dance society at university, so teaching is very much second nature to me. I pride myself on developing trusting and reliable relationships with students so they have a better outlook on the subject and feel they can ask any question, however simple the answer may be.

About the lesson

Key info: 45 mins - 1 hour sessions. I can teach GCSE and A level Chemistry :)

I will first get to know the student e.g. what they believe their strengths and weaknesses are, what they want to gain from tutoring and what their end goals are. Based off this information, I will devise a plan (which I will check by the student) that aims to improve the areas they feel need work, as well as generate a greater confidence over time in their abilities. As we go along, if either I or the student would like to change the plan then I will make sure I adapt it, as the student's needs are my priority.

Having studied chemistry for many years, I know the best revision and study strategies. Active recall is an effective, engaging method that ensures the information is actually being learnt permanently, and it isn't as intensive as sitting past paper questions on repeat. Being familiar with methods and understanding the basics of chemistry are key to being able to answer any question, familiar or not. I will revise the basics and help them to see how this could be applied in questions, with regular low pressure tests and assignments. Having been a tutee in the past, I know how important it is to maintain a trusting and comfortable relationship with the tutor, whereby the student can ask questions without any fear and not feel intimidated or nervous going into the session. I have tutored other students during my A levels and the reported feeling much more confident in class and exams, as well starting to enjoy chemistry more.
